Any Crate featuring their Flexwave Evolution 5 preamp.

Tube-like tone. Tube-like feel. Great custom speaker that is perfect for dialing in crisp, bold cleans or violent distortion.

Great easy to use features with many available cosmetics from vintage to ultra-modern. I like open back cabinet design as it sounds more open and pleasing to my ears.

TRULY an innovative amp line good for many guitarists with a need for versatility on the stage and in the studio.

I have tried a few of the recent Crates...and was impressed with the "Flexwave Evolution" thing.

It did sound pretty nice...and I am more of a tube-guy.
The little Crates are inexpensive as well.

It all depends on the application.

My Peavey Bandit 112S sounds quite good with LesStrat in front.

First-series Sunn Concert Lead (early '70s). Built like a tube amp - discrete components, no op-amps. One of, if not the first amp to use MOSFETs in the preamp.

The output transistors are transformer-driven and feel a lot like a tube amp. In terms of tone, feel, and gain, it's very similar to a contemporary 50W Marshall.

I have to put modellers in different categories. They're not tube, but they're not SS either, they're digital. A true SS amp as we know it and are familiar with are transistors and IC's that require no programming at all. If there's DSP affects built in, that's OK, it's just when things get in to the modelling arena do they get away from being analog and are true digital. But I also understand that some look at SS as anything without tubes.

The BEST SS amp?

for cleans.>Roland JC

otherwise..the best I've heard are those Sword of Satori things...but they are HIGH dollar.

Old 80s Marshalls, and the 80s Randalls if 3K is outta your budget :bigthumb:

Re: Best Solid State amp

I had a Randall Commander head for a while. But 120 sold state watts is not anywhere near loud enough.

He got to it first. Great little amp! I use it at my school in the jazz band there and I can dial in a sparkly clean, softer jazzy clean, edgy slight breakup, a fuzzy 60s-like overdrive, classic rock crunch, all the way to some classic metal.

+1 again! And I agree with all the Jazz/Chorus fans out there too - but only for the uber cleanliness. Slightly mild breakup from that - no way!!!!

And there are still people trying to creep some modellers in there - that's a different creature....Post a best digital modeller post if that's what you want!

Re: Best Solid State amp

The Rolands are pretty freaking awesome for cleans.

I <3 Randall and always will, lol, I think they kick so much ass and I get such a brutal tone from mine.

+1. They work pretty well when hooked up to a cab to provide a fuller sound and get rid of some of that nasty ss amp distortion tone. The cleans on it are pretty good, but the dirty channel needs some work. I put it to about 3-4 on gain and treble all the way down, mids to full, and bass to taste, to reduce the buzzy distortion and make it smoother.

H&K ZenTera. Fantasic modelling, and seldom do those words end up next to each other in the same sentence!:laugh2:

If you're a modelling guy, you owe it to yourself to check these out. Not cheap by ANY standards, but killer SS amps.

If we're talking just cleans, Roland JC-120 as many have mentioned.

Ok let me think of the words... ok like at that price if you buy that over a nice bogner or fender or mesa then you should be shot.:firing: Just my opion of course.
