Best-sounding Mono Chorus?

Just curious to see what you guys think is the strongest-sounding chorus pedal when used monaurally... I've gone through a lot of them and I think the only one I could be really satisfied with used mono would be the Boss CE-20; it just seems to have a TON of strength and spatialness even in mono.

For now the ones built into my GT5 and the Cool Cat I just got from ranger1bn75inf will do just fine for mono and they sound nice but I hate to say it... after owning a Marshall VS265R (which has a WONDERFUL built in analog chorus) and practicing thru my POD on headphones I've become addicted to stereo chorus.

So what's your fave chorus pedal for mono applications?

Re: Best-sounding Mono Chorus?

If you can find a Chrous that is not set up to be stereo it will be far better that using a stereo chorus with only one side. My fav has always been the Electro Harmonix Small Clone, but I prefer EH units almost all the time.

Re: Best-sounding Mono Chorus?

BOSS CE-2. It's my favorite chorus period!

But I like the Danolectro Cool Cat you mentioned for playing through two amps in stereo. Gets a HUGE sound through two amps. A little noisy but a very musical tone.

For mono tho, it's the CE-2 all the way.

I did not know that the CE-2 was a mono unit!

Re: Best-sounding Mono Chorus?

Another gem is the Arion SCH-1 (not the SCH-Z). If I was buying a mono chorus today, it'd probably be the Analogman Clone Clone or the Retro-Sonic CE-1 clone. Of course, on a budget the Small Clone works beautifully.

These two are the Best mono Chorus i've used for years:

Vintage Electro-Harmonix Small Clone ( 1983 )

Old Ghost, it appears that you are on the same page with both Lew and myself...let me ask you this...how does the CE-2 compare to the Small Clone?

I had a CE-2, both stock and with the Keeley mod, and I preferred the Small Clone. The clone just had this really pleasant thickness about it, and IIRC it seemed more lush and organic.

CE-2B, i use mine for guitar... i havnt tried a CE-2 yet for comparison, but the chorus sounds with the bass pedal inspire me to play new stuff... thats all that really matters to me at the mo :burnout:

I just prefer EH boxes to a lot of other brands...and that is why!

The CE-2 is a bit different than the Small Clone. The CE-2 has more presence and it seems to have a bit of a mid boost when the effect is switched on. It's very lush, warm and shimmery. Great sounding pedal!
The Small Clone sounds deeper, lusher with a more leslie type chorusing. You can definitly feel the warmth of a great sounding analog chorus here. When the effect is switched on, it has a tiny bit of a volume drop but not noticeable enough. There is a reason why AnalogMan Mike Piera "Cloned" the Small Clone. It shows us how great this pedal really is.
Both pedal design uses a BBD IC Chip in the Delay circuit. The CE-2 uses the MN3002 and the Small Clone uses the famous Reticon SAD1024 IC so they're a bit different in sound and feel but both sound great! I love both of them :)
Also it's worth taking note that the reissue Small Clone also sounds great! It has a different circuit than the original Small Clone and uses a different BBD Chip and sounds very different than the original but it sounds great! It doesn't have the volume drop, more presence and very rich sounding chorus. I also have one of these in my collection. This is one of those reissues that sounds nothing like the original but it holds it's own great tone. It is definitly one of the best sounding analog chorus out there for its price range.
Hope this helps. :)

I'm gonna have to check the Small Clone and CE2 out... thanks guys! Keep it coming if ya got more to say!

Re: Best-sounding Mono Chorus?

CE-2, Voodoo Lab analog chorus, and Fulltone DejaVibe for mono units. I really like the Cool Cat and Fulltone ChoralFlange but they are stereo units.

Re: Best-sounding Mono Chorus?

Just so's you know, David Gilmore (Pink Floyd) used a CE-2 alot. Maybe he still does!

Re: Best-sounding Mono Chorus?

I had a MIT CE2.... I dumped it for a SmallClone Ri.

The MIJ sounds better btw.

Agreed. The CE-2 is the most natural sounding chorus pedal of its day, and still holds up extremely well.
