I play mostly 80's/90's rock, such as GNR, Motley Crue, Poison, Ozzy, Jackyll, Stone Temple Pilots, some Skynyrd, etc. I mainly use an Epiphone Les Paul with Alnico II Pros and also an LTD with EMGs. I am going to get a WhiteBox 2x12 cab, but am having a hell of a time trying to decide which speakers to get in it. I have it narrowed down to V30/G12H30, Governor/Wizard, and Texas Heat/Swamp Thang, but would also be open to other options. Thanks for the help!

I have this amp, and I'm either putting an X pattern of WGS Retro 30 and Reaper HP, or Eminence Governor and Wizard speakers in my 412. So, of those choices, I'd go with the Gov/Wiz combo.

Have either of you guys tried any of these speakers for this particular amp? I am having a hell of a time finding clips of this amp with different speakers than the 70/80s in the Blackstar cab. My biggest concern is with it being a modeling amp, that the British sounding speakers (which I normally like) would color the tone too much. I typically like this coloring, but am wondering if something more neutral sounding would work better for this particular amp. I also want something that will sound good at bedroom levels, as well as cranked.

I will probably try some WGS, in the future, especially since they are American made, but for this project I will be sticking to Celestion or Eminence. The WGS would be a special order, making them more expensive than the Eminence or Celestion that come stock.

I have not tried any of these, that's just what I want to try.

For what it's worth, I'm not using a Blackstar cab, and it sounds great with the speakers I'm using. I don't think you'll have any issues using whatever speakers you want.

Who are you buying from? Buying speaker direct from WGS is cheaper than a new Eminence or Celestion from a shop.

As for the coloring the 70/80s aren't horrible speakers but they aren't the greatest compared to other Celestions. If you want a neutral sounding speaker than try some Neodymium speaker offerings or speakers that aren't heavily EQ'd a certain way.

I'm sure Blk* voiced and made the amp in regard that each tone sounds close to what they are suppose to emulate.

What speakers are you using it with now?

I am ordering it from WhiteBox Engineering. Adding two Celestion or Eminence speakers only adds $130, which is about the price of one v30. If I don't end up liking what I get, I think that it would be easier to sell the Celestion or Eminence, but I could be wrong. I am not certain that I want distinctively voiced or neutral, because the only thing that I have tried this amp with are 70/80s. I am hoping to get some input from others who have tried it with different speakers.

I'm using stock Carvin speakers that came in my cab.

I don't think that this amp should be any different than any other amp in regards to speaker choice.

Thanks. I had a suggestion for Celestion Classic Lead 80s on another forum. I listened to some clips of them, and they sounded good as well. I did see some complaints that they sound very sterile at bedroom volume. I know that most, if not all, of the higher powered speakers need to be moving some air to sound their best, but I wonder which ones sound good at bedroom levels.

Wake up sleepy thread! : )
What ohms does this amp want? Blackstar site doesn't even mention it. . .

Re: Best speakers in a 2x12 for Blackstar ID:60TVP-H

It wants 4 ohms, but will happily accept 8 or 16 at a cut in output. I use an 8 ohm cab and it works great.

I did end up going with WGS, and I think they sound great.

Re: Best speakers in a 2x12 for Blackstar ID:60TVP-H

I have an Avatar 2x12 closed back cab with 2x Governors. They are fantastic for classic British tones and have great mids that are clear and defined in a mix with bass, drums and rhythm guitar. Holds its own with the other guitarist who has a marshall 4x12 with greenbacks.

Re: Best speakers in a 2x12 for Blackstar ID:60TVP-H

I hate to derail but...

....I insulate my closed cabs to make the sound bigger. Does anyone else do that with their 2x12s?
