Re: Best Strap Locks ever made

Interesting, but meh. I find it hard to believe anything is really better than dunlop or schaller, which are equal in quality. dimarzio clip loks are a cooler version of those IMO.

But there is a vintage mojo about them I can dig. Just sayin' anything I REALLY don't want to drop gets Dunlop.

Re: Best Strap Locks ever made

I understand the need for straplocks, but I've never had to use them. Does the necessity arise from crappy strap material or is it because of swinging the guitar around?

Re: Best Strap Locks ever made

^the strap holes get bigger 'n' looser if ya take it off and put it on enough. often those little strap buttons pop off easily once that happens.

personally, i've got a few sets of schallers, 2 on my guitars and one just sitting around.

Re: Best Strap Locks ever made

I find Schaller and Dunlops nut to come loose. I am always checking and feel insecure with them.

I have used the leather ones on my 77 Les Paul with total confidence all these years.

Loctite(NOT red loctite or it may never come apart!), super glue, or even clear nail polish on the threads will help stop that.

Re: Best Strap Locks ever made

I've used both the Dunlop and Schaller systems, but always end up going back to these Dunlop Lok Straps. They're simple, they're cheap, they require no modification to the guitar or strap and they work. Been using them for years and never dropped a guitar:

yep, loctite on schallers and they will never come off. only complaint is having to open up the strap tabs to get the schallers to fit nicely. once they're on they have never come off on me. i also usually use the screw from the original strap buttons on the guitar. the threading and length isnt always the same. i have used some locks similar to the ones mentioned and while they did work great, they just didnt fit the look i was going for i guess. i like things simple... but they are good, dont get me wrong.

Re: Best Strap Locks ever made

Ever since I saw a leather straplock tear and release the instrument aeons ago, I´ve been firmly convinced that the last thing I need on a strap is a further extension of the weakest part (the leather ends).

I prefer Schallers and have them installed on all of my electrics save my Flying V which has Dunlops. I use a drop of loctite or a second nut to lock the nut in place (IMO Schaller should be selling these with 2 nuts and then they´d be absolutely bulletproof). I prefer the Schaller system becasue even if the lock itself fails, the pin is still well cradled in the lock housing wheras a ball, spring or pin failure on Dunlops generally results in an instant catastrophe because the strap can then slide right out of the pin (rare, but can happen). IMO the biggest redeeming quality of the dunlops is that they can be "stealthed" by recessing the pin into the body a lá Warwick.

However, Dunlops do not have a nut but use an e-clip to secure the lock assembly to the strap, unless the design has been changed (which I wouldn´t rule out as I only have one set and they´re from ´93). So I´m not sure right now where that statement is coming from.

Are you talking about the screw holding the button to the guitar body or something else?

I've used Dunlops since I started playing and they haven't failed me yet.

Dunlop strap locks use ball bearings that over time fall out and then the lock fails...

Schaller locksleave black greese all over everything if you are not careful...a real buymmer for white shirts plus they are prone to making noise which can often be heard thought the guitar. On top of that I have a Schaller strp button that was almost cut in half because of the strap end lock...never again!

Clip locks break...and the straps kind of suck for anything heavier than a Strat...

I dropped one guitar, one time...down side for me I was on stage in front of a packed house...

I've never been w/o locks since then...

I did this for a long time on the nuts to keep the strat ends on the strap but liek I said above there are just too many issues with both the Dunlop and the Schallers.

If you replace them every so often it's fine but why bother if there is a better lock out there!

Love these too!!

I have a few guitars that do not have leather locks on them and I use these...simple but very effective!

Re: Best Strap Locks ever made

I like the schallers. Never had one fail on me. As far as the nut goes i just make sure its very very tight :)
