Best String Cleaner EVER! Warning: Not for feint of heart....

Re: Best String Cleaner EVER! Warning: Not for feint of heart....

Contrary to popular belief, three years ago I sprayed a little WD-40 into the squeaky hinges of my bathroom door, and to this day it moves silently and will slam shut from the breeze of another door opening. And no, I’m not using it near my strings or fretboards.

This is not typically the case. White lithium grease is a better permanent solution most of the time.

While your at it Ace, get yourself a feking dictionary.. the amount of contextually incorrect words you use is appalling for a tertiary graduate.

OK, it might not be slimy. But it will certainly smell. And I don't think it is good anywhere near wood.

When ever i use it i always seem to have a residue feeling on my hands.

I've found lemon oil works just as well, or BOSS guitar detailer.
Make sure to wipe any fluid off the strings when you're done cleaning.

I clean rosewood boards and bodies in general with Lemon pledge

Re: Best String Cleaner EVER! Warning: Not for feint of heart....

WD-40 was invented to evaporate liquids off circuit boards without leaving anything behind (WD = water displacing). Because of this, it won't feel slimy, and relatedly, it's not a good lubricant.

IME, you CAN use it as a lubricant...but you have to keep shooting it on whatever is being lubed. Because it isn't really a lubricant....

No Dave - you shouldn't be putting it on your wood.

Heh.

Clean your strings with lithium grease.

Could that be considered a verbal parry?

EDIT: More a verbal riposte, now that I think of it.

I've used it on hinges, also. You likely had dry grease and dust/debris which the WD-40 helped displace, essentially "cleaning" the contact surfaces, rather than lubricating them.

It is NOT a lubricant. It WILL get rid of squeaks in many joints temporarily by wicking into them and helping to remove/loosen other materials, but it is not an ideal or long-term solution if you want to avoid excessive wear on contact surfaces (not that it matters much with door hinges particularly) and want permanent squeak free solution

Re: Best String Cleaner EVER! Warning: Not for feint of heart....

This. It actually works well to clean things of old grease/lubricants so that new lubricants can be applied. It is not a lubricant itself, contrary to popular misconception

While WD-40 is a ****ty lubricant (and as mentioned was designed mostly to displace water and strip lubricants from stuff), it does leave behind a very thin oil after spraying.

Re: Best String Cleaner EVER! Warning: Not for feint of heart....

Just want to point out -WD-40 has small amount of lubricant in it -but it should NOT be used as an actual lubricant, -it should be used to remove moisture and dissolve and capture debris for removal from the substrate. it has no long term way to remain on the substrate and provide actual lubrication -the hydrocarbons evaporate, and the rest is wiped away if you are using it correctly.

That said, it should technically work for a guitar string cleaner, but that SMELL on your guitar is just not worth it IMO.

So many other things are superior.

As much as I am fully behind the content of your post, I must post out the irony in the fact that you used "your" incorrectly in it, not to mention failing to capitalize the first word in a sentence, and using a double period. :D

Thanks for your correction. It's a pity Ace didn't make it. None the less , I'm an academic failure when it comes to written English. Not like graduate Ace.:bigthumb:
