whatevr gauge i use for standard i increas for each whole step i drop. so i have 9-46 in standard and thn i use 10's with a heavier bottom and then 11's for and so forth. all this considering im doing drop D tuned flatter and flatter.
I play D Addario 12-52 w/ a wound G (Jazz Lights), and would have it no other way. They last forever and have great character. I have no problem bending wound G strings at all. Just make sure you properly intonate after installing larger guage strings (such as filing the nut).
I tune anywhere from standard E to Dropped A# (for bringing the doom),. All I can say is that they suit me fine. Worth a shot at least.
I've tried wound g's and i did'nt like them. An unwound g has a very nice shimmer to it, the would g's has a very dry tone. They seem to break very easily too (or maybe it's just me) and they are very difficout to bend.
I play metal and rock on Les Pauls. I find 60-70 gauge the best for thickness of tone and ease of staying in tune in C#. Not floppy on my guitars at all. But that's just me. MrHM.
REMEMBER though if your using a heavier string you are going to Have to adjust the string level the thicker the string the higher the string has to be adjusted or you will have hella fret buzz.... its simple to do on bith tune o matic style and FR type trems but dont forget that. some people think that they throw on a thick set and thats it but guitar is all about tension and balance.
FOR EVERY GIVE YOU HAVE AN = TAKE
in this instance thicker strings means higher string adjustments
13-56 is what i use and i tune to C# and i have no problems
