Best tube amp in history

This is sort of a poll, but without the poll. Please reply with any and all tube amps that you think are the best. So far, I've tried a couple, but not a lot, and so far to me, the Fender Twin Reverb is my favorite.

Re: Best tube amp in history

I've got a lot of favorites.... Sunn model T, Mesa Rectifiers, Marshall JCM 800, tons of old Fenders, Krank Revolution One, Vox AC30....

Re: Best tube amp in history

Depends on what you're looking for. Tube amp is a broad term.

I think in pretty much any case, you need to go back to the 'originals.' I'd say close to 90% of amps are just trying to emulate something that's already been pretty close to perfected.

If you want Fender-y cleans, you'd want a vintage Fender, most likely from the Blackface era. If you need headroom with those cleans, I say a Twin Reverb.

If you want Vox-y cleans, you'd want an original AC-30.

If you want Marshall-y dirt Plexi-style, you'd want an original Marshall Plexi.

Etc. etc.

It's all personal preference.

EDIT: Furthermore,

All these things are very expensive, and hard to find which is why these boutique guys are in business. A Germino will most likely give an old Marshall a run for it's money as a Fuchs is apparently a more versatile Dumble.

I think the best tube amp would be one that got everything in one package. Cleans JUST like an old Fender or Vox, dirt JUST like an old Marshall and maybe lead tones JUST like a Dumble. Amps are around like that, but they contain many compromises.

I've plugged into every benchmark amp, and this one comes out on top, IMO.
But you knew I was gonna say that!

4 (or 5 or many...lol) way tie between a JTM 45 (or 45/100, both improved versions of the Bassman circuit, which is wh it was excluded), Deluxe Reverb (or you can substitute pretty much any AB763 or 963 circuit blackface here), tweed Bandmaster and an low powered tweed Twin. I have a couple of these and have heard all of them.....my current personal fave is the Twin.

So if I had to give up every amp I own and just keep one which would it be?

Boy...it'd be down to my modded Deluxe Reverbs, modded Vibrolux Reverb and Matchless Chieftan. All have reverb.

Or the Mission Aurora with reverb.

I love my old tweed amps but I like reverb...so I'd keep one of my amps with reverb.

As far as loud and clean goes, I don't think there's anything better sounding than a really good Twin Reverb...but there are some that are a lot lighter!

I don't have any interest at all in Bogners and the like....just not my style.

I would say the medium powered 6L6 Fender tweeds from '56 to '59...these were the benchmarks for what an electric guitar sounds like. Marshall et al. based their original designs on these circuits because that's what people wanted...of course this is a very broad question, but the root of much of what we expect to hear came from Fullerton.

Best tube amp for my style thats cheap = the classic 30
But I really want to try an orange AD30

Re: Best tube amp in history

The boutique stuff is great, but most of them are still copies of Fender,Marshall, and Vox circuits, which are copies of early Western Electric circuits of the 1930s...

I guess I'm still basically just a Fender/Marshall guy!

JOE:

the BOGNER ECSTASY CLASSIC at GC came off of layaway

I am thinking about it seriously. I LOVE THE SHIVA, incl the PRICE - but man that PLEXI channel and the HIGH gain sounds - YUM

But ahhh the Shiva CLEAN is to DIE FOR!

I listened to the soundclips of that amp, and now I REALLY want to try it! And it looks great with the basketweave grill on the front.
