Gerald Weber once said that the BF Deluxe would be his choice for the ultimate "desert isle" amp if you could only have one. i would agree for reasons previously stated....great clean and dirty tone and it has two "pedals" built into it. i would include the Princeton and Vibrolux in that category too., dependingon what your ultimate volume needs are for a single amp. Small enough not to kill you when played in a smaller practice space, but big enough to gig. Fenders get to be pretty brutal on the ears starting with the Super and Pro. Twin in a practice space? fagidaboutit....lol Lew....do you find that when you put that very efficient Celestion in a Deluxe that you can get pretty close to Vibrolux volume?

I have a killer blackface Vibrolux Reverb with a pair of '66 Jensen C10N speakers. The Vibrolux is bigger and clearer sounding than the Deluxe. The Vibrolux fills a room with cleaner faster tone. The DR's break up sooner, but 90% of the time they're perfect since we guitarists love to play loud but rarely can. With the DRI can go from cleanish rythym to overdrive soloing tones at lower volumes...and with the Vibrolux I can do the same thing but have enough power to play with a loudish drummer and bassplayer.

The Vibrolux is the ultimate Tele amp...at least Roy and Danny thought so!

I haven't had my Vibrolux renovated yet, so at this point, I would say that MY ultimate Tele amp is the Twin. Ultimate Strat amp depends on which Strat. The '54 REALLY likes the 18w, whereas the '62 likes all of them but seems to prefer the Twin. I haven't tried the Marshall yet sincce i had the handwired board and the Mercury OT installed. Not enough space. That tranny made it even louder than before and it has only been played at the shop with a P90 equipped Hamer.

Re: Best tube amp in history

I have to say my vote goes to the original rock amp -- the Marshall Plexi.

Come on, guys, you have to give it up for the Plexi. It's the 100 watt monster that gave us the high gain we know and love.

plexis are more of the original blues rock amp

Re: Best tube amp in history

Now I guess I get to reply.
After all my aggrivation, searching, and playing through tons of amps, I have to say that the Twin Reverb is my desert isle amp. I have tremolo and reverb, and I have master versus channel volume for distortions. I have played the '65 reissue of them and they are insanely loud, but the one I have is still my favorite. And let it be said that I played through essentially ALL the amps at a largish music store. Of course I only played twins or smaller.
As for a "desert isle + effects" amp, those 30 watt 30DFX marshalls are nice and portable. They sound pretty good too. Too bad they distort something ugly at times. But honestly, even in church, my twin is my "savior". Too bad I'm back to only my stomp box and guitar. But the ME-50 does compression, so I can just run all my effects through a very mild compressor setting and get something decent out of it :D

Re: Best tube amp in history

I think the vox ac 30 is the best rock amp i`v tested!
Fender Bassman 100 for clean tones. But,there is a lot of amps:)

Re: Best tube amp in history

Fender Tweed Lo Power Twin. Keep the 2 rectifiers for no sag, remove 1 for the sag. Thats like 2 amps in one right there. Plus, the Twin gets amazing cleans too that are so damn transparent. And you got bright and normal channels and the thing looks sick too!

Re: Best tube amp in history

I would be quite happy owning only these five amps for the rest of my life:

An original Vox AC30
1963 Fender Deluxe Reverb
Matchless Chieftain
1968 Marshall Super Lead half stack
Mesa/Boogie Mark III half stack
