i still have the crappy ruby red stock tubes in mine haha. i was wondering what the popular tubes used for this model are?

Re: best tubes for a 6505+?

I'd get Svetlana 6L6's, and buy 1 Tungsol pre tube for the 1st position. The stock pre's are fine for the others. No need to change them unless they're bad.

I like JJ EL-34's, but I've had some of their 6L6's that rattle from the internal bracing. The Svets are rock solid, sound great, and last really long.

Re: best tubes for a 6505+?

Gearjoneser has a point with the JJ 6L6 rattling on ocassion. I like the JJ sound quality and have had no problems with them in heads, but I do get some rattle in a 212 that have. Otherwise, I think they are a great choice. Inexpensive and sound great.

Re: best tubes for a 6505+?

I love JJ's in the pre and power of my 5150.

Currently have Mesa 6L6's in there cause that's all that was available locally... don't sound half bad!

Re: best tubes for a 6505+?

Mesa tubes ain't bad at all actually- they're tested pretty vigorously for consistency. Only thing I use in my recto cuz using different tubes voids the warranty.

Re: best tubes for a 6505+?

Groove Tubes GT6L6GE is the ultimate for these amps, very tubey/syrupy gain. Good EVH tone. I would use the GT6L6S for a more "in your face" meaty metal type tone.

For the preamp, I love the ECC83.

This of course considering money is not a problem, these run quite high, but they will give you great results.

LMAO A that's retarded and B how can they prove you used other tubes?

But yeah, from what I've heard, Mesas are just re-branded and vigorously tested Groove Tubes, which are just rebranded and vigorously tested Sovteks, IIRC.

Re: best tubes for a 6505+?

It is indeed retarded, BUUUT I frankly will not be able to afford a new amp for a pretty long time so since the mesa tubes sound good I just cover my bases that way.

Re: best tubes for a 6505+?

A friend of mine has a 5150 and swears by JJ Tubes for the pre-amp section & Svetlana Tubes for the power-amp sections.

just wondering what other people think about just changing out the 1st position tube. not saying its right or wrong, just wanting more input. cause i really don't know haha.

Re: best tubes for a 6505+?

I've got JJ's in the power section of my 5150 II and I'm pretty satisfied. Very loud and bold.
