Best way to boost an amp? Triamp content.

Hey,

what do you all find is the best way to boost for a solo? EQ in the loop or gain boost up front? I am finding with my triamp, I love the 3rd channel for heavy rhythm but can't find what I want on channel two for lead unless I boost with a tube xreamer or something. Using channel 3 with an EQ in the loop to boost mids, etc for lead seems to make the most sense.

anyone find the best way to boost for mids or maybe it just really depends on the amp! LOL.

Thanks!

It really depends on the amp, the solo, the sound and a lot of things.
- If you have a good sound dialed in and just want a boost - use a boost up front.
- If you need to add slice and dice to a great rhythm sound, EQ is the way to go.
- Add sustain on lower gain, compressor is better.
- Add hair and volume, a Screamer is my favorite!

Your call bro - just experiment.

Well, on channel 2 of the triamp, I can dial in a good lead but it needs a boost, hair and volume.
On channel 3 with a killer rhythm dialed in, it needs some EQ for slicing and dicing.

Putting a boost in front of a distorted amp won't give much of a bump in volume.

Re: Best way to boost an amp? Triamp content.

No more than goosing the gain.
That does depend on the amount of distortion on the amp if its a light crunch you can still boost volume but if its fully saturated it doesnt go up much.

Re: Best way to boost an amp? Triamp content.

The guys are right. Adding a boost even though it has a "volume" control will only hit the pre amp harder. With the compression that's already there, it just won't boost up the volume. Best solution by far is EQ in the loop. That really works great.

I've used both eq and a mxr micro amp in the loop. The micro amp was and still is my favorite.

+1.... I use the MXR micro amp in the loop, this gives me a nice boost.. from subtle to loud.. and if I'm playing clean it just boosts the clean signal without hardly, if any, changing the tone. If I put it in the front of the amp, it just tends to drive the Pre amp valves into drive without making much difference to the volume. I've tried the same with my GE7, but this pedal changes the tone, and I don't mean the Eq, it sucks the tone.. I don't use it all all now. The Micro amp is hard wired which is good, though not true bypass. All the best.

MXR 10 band eq in the loop is your answer!
true bypass ,volume and gain control. It's like an extra channel on your amp!

Re: Best way to boost an amp? Triamp content.

Sounds like you need a booster and an eq...no problem.

And the whole in the loop/in front depends on a lot of things including the type of preamp, gain/output levels, amount of boost in the pedal, blah blah blah. Try both positions til you get the sound & volume you like.

Wow, that sounds great. I was going to look into a Boss GE-7 with a Monte Allums pedal modification. I was going to keep the EQ in the loop, but I am not sure I could make use of the gain slider since it will be in the loop. True?

Now, I just have to decide if I am going to keep my Triamp, get a Mesa Roadster, Marshall JVM or Peavey. :17:
