Best Ways to Tighten Up A JB, God Knows They Need It!

Lowering the bass side screws helped me too. Other than that I think you just want a new pickup. Get an Alt 8 instead.

I Really like the JB in the bridge of my maple/poplar Godin Redline. Pure hard and heavy. But I wanted more chuga-chuga on the 6th string palm mutings, more deffinition and articulation. Also looking for a more PAF on steroids sound, more Custom5ish.

So I've changed the alnico 5 mag for a tinier alnico 4. VOILA!!! More deffinition in the 6th string (you don't get mud on the palm mutings), the nasal mids are not nasal now (but still very present), and the output has been reduced. The highs are a bit rounder too. In general, the pickup has cleaned up a lot. It sounds more like my Gibson SG with P90, saving the distances... It should be 11-12k now, more or less...

Just give it a try, if you don't like it put the 5 again :D

Id put an alnico 8 into it, ive played a jb but never owned one because i never found them tight enough for me, and i play metal, its pretty common for alnico 8 mag to be put in the jb...

I put a brass baseplate on a JB today with a ceramic magnet and it totally transformed the pickups sound. It sounds a lot more like a Norton now than a JB. It really filled out the bass and midrange and toned down the piercing treble.

I like the Norton too. Sort of like everything the JB should have been. To fix a JB my solution has always been a small ceramic instead of the A5 and short 1/2" hex screws replacing the 6 slotted screws.

Lower th pickup height, then raise the screw poles up higher than the slug poles. Then fiddle with the knobs on your amp and youre good to go.
