Better Grab This Dumble Rig Before Someone Snatches It

Re: Better Grab This Dumble Rig Before Someone Snatches It

It was bought by Cliff, the owner of Fractial Audio (the makers of the Axe-Fx). He will be taking it apart and modelling it for the AxeFx2. There is already a model of the Dumble in it, but it was based on a boutique copy, now there will be a copy of the real thing.

Here is the thread: http://forum.fractalaudio.com/axe-fx-ii-discussion/63717-guess-what-amp-i-just-bought.html

I'll never understand the cult of Dumble but the cult of modeling is something else all together and I understand it even less...

Some of us demand greater flexibility and variety from our rigs.

What's hard to understand?

I guess that's what I don't understand...

I can't see needing or wanting that many sounds form one rig plus I am the type of guy that would much rather have an amp that does one or two things very ell then an amp that does a ton of stuff not so well and I have yet to hear a modeling amp that to me was "good enough" for me.

Just my 2 cents...

this is all IMHO and YMMV

I don't think many users of modelling use it in that way. I use a modeller (not an axe fx, too rich for my tastes) and the only amp models I use are of a Fender Twin for cleans and of a Soldano for the overdrive. I don't think anybody really needs 30 different high gain amp models and two dozen low-medium gain models; but having a wide range allows people to choose and find their own sound, and so it attracts more customers. Some like fender sounds while others like vox, some want Marshall and others want mesa. Etc.

Cliff from Fractal Audio owns a lot of tube amps. He spent a lot on the Dumble, but he can write it off as a business expense and sell it for a profit later anyway. Meanwhile he's generated hype for his product and might has catered to those who have not been interested by news of the recent Diezel and ENGL high gain models that have recently bee added. He is attracting more business. There is also no additional cost to have your modeller contain 3 models or 300 models, so best have as many and as wide a range as possible.

Most people use modeller because they are convenient. I use one because I don't have the space for an amp and can't play very loud where I am. Often I can only play at night so I have to use headphones. I do a lot of recording but haven't played with a band for years. As you can see, a modeler is better than an amp for me. Besides, lots of people are happy with the sound and feel of modellers.

I've never seen the hype of Dumbles. I can't tell the difference between them and any other nice low gain amp like a deluxe reverb or something. But for those who love the Dumble and own an axefx, given how rare and expensive tumbles are, this is good news.

Re: Better Grab This Dumble Rig Before Someone Snatches It

That seems like an awful lot of money for an amplifier. And is it just because some big name players use it? It would be great if someone reverse engineered that to dispel all the hype and mystery behind Dumble amps. It would be great if someone determined that the Dumble circuit is a cross between a twin, bassman, and a plexi... Or whatever combination of amp circuits it happens to be. And it sold for over 50k? Really..

There are plenty of great guitar amps out there now that are way more affordable and probably sound great. Though I do agree that it would be cool to have an accurate model of that amp. That way the rest of us that don't have $50k sitting around could get accurate Dumble tones in the Axe Fx.

Been reversed engineered...until the cows came home. They are home. Lots of 'dumble' circuit modded amps for sale here in Austin. At the end of the day, there are equally dymanic amps, but they just aren't a Dumble. It is just supply and demand on a collectors item. Most collectors items are 'special' of course, but nothing that is better than everything else, just its own thing. Can't get em new (its a rare possibility) and that makes them worth a bunch. They are what they are. Some players buy them and flip em, some collect them etc.

'Big name players' don't endorse Dumble amp, they really use them. Perhaps not live as much because they are so valuable, but they get used.
We are a dramatic bunch. We buy and sell used pedals for more than we can get them new because we don't want to wait. :)

I'd hope anyone guitar player (vs collector) has at least played every common great amp out there before dropping that kinda money on an amp (VOX, HiWatt, Marshall, Mesa, VHT, Bogner, Trainwreck, Bad Cat, Matchless, Fender etc etc). Collectors on the other hand they can collect whatever they can afford sucks when it drives gear prices up (80s BOSS and Ibanez pedals) but it happens for any object of worth.

Ceriatone among alot of others make "clones' of expensive amps such as Trainwrecks and Dumbles.

i would just love to crack the case and see what kinds of capacitors, resistors, peg board and power supplies are worth 55k.

Same stuff you'd expect to find in any other amp...Howard never went nuts searching for special mojo parts however more than likely the board in that amp is covered in epoxy!

The reason that amp sold for 55k has nothing at all to do with it's build quality, it's tone or anything else...they are rare and almost never come up for sale so folks will pay BIG bucks for them.

LOL. It's always fun when the shoe is on the other foot.
