Better Phase 90

I love the sound of my Phase 90 (normal issue) but I hate it's bypass. I've already looked into TBing it but the switch is integraded into the PCB so I can't do that without major surgury.

Anyway, I'm looking for options. I'm interested in either a non-tone sucking Phase 90 (does the script logo re-issue suck tone) or another phaser that sounds similar to a Phase 90.

I'm not interested in a true bypass box or any phaser that doesn't sound similar to a Phase 90.

Re: Better Phase 90

Two options, actually three.

1. Add a buffer at the output (see my site for how it's done in the DIY section). The buffer eliminated the tone sucking without having to cut the PCB itself, just a trace.

2. The EVH Phase 90 has hard-wire bypass (same thing as TB). No tone sucking with that one.

3. Get the BYOC kit and make one pretty much identical to the old script logo.

1. I tried putting a buffer immediately before it and after it and it didn't do anything. Is this what you mean? Or do you mean right on the PCB.

1a. What's the link to your site?

2. I heard that from one other guy but now that I've heard it from two it's looking more promising.

3. Will it fit in the Phase 90 box?

1. Right on the PCB. www.erikhansen.net/diy/phase90.htm. See the "Output Buffer" section towards the bottom.

2. I thought about it myself. No hurry for me though.

3. The BYOC circuit comes with its own box but you can paint it however you want.

Re: Better Phase 90

If you have to have a Phase 90, then stick with it and get a true bypass box for it.

Using a TB box would double the size of my pedalboard.

Isn't your mod electrically the same as adding a buffer right after the pedal? Your method puts the buffer right before the tip and mine puts it right after the tip. I know that mine did improve the tone considerably but it was still not 100%.

I'm seriously thinking about the Script re-issue. It's supposed to be a hard wire circuit just like the EVH.

Wow, I'm retarded, I didn't even notice "no TB boxes" in the first thread :smack:

If the Scripted MXR RI Phase 90 is really handwired, that'd definitely be the way to go (provided you like the Scripted sound... it is more mellow than the regular Phase 90).

Technically, it is. To save space on the pedalboard I opted to put it in the Phase 90 enclosure. Which buffer circuit are you using? It might not have a low enough impedence at the output.

I can vouch that the EVH 90 doesnt have the tone suck also. Its a great sounding phase, with script and non script. If you can get past the paint job without feeling like a poser :)

I'm now looking at the Retro-Sonic Phaser;

At $200CAD it'll cost me a little more than an EVH Phase 90 (EVH Phase 90s sell for around $170 to $199 CAD the few times I've seen them), but it has a depth and level controls and no silly paint job.

EDIT: Actually... I found a Canadian dealer who's selling them for $175.....

Hmmm. That's a good buffer circuit too. I'm surprised it's not fixing the issue 100%.

Although I may be petty....that is exactly the reason I won't buy one.
Same here. That is the ONLY thing stopping me, which some may think is strange considering he was a major influence for me. I could always strip it and repaint it. :)

That's a sharp looking phaser right there. The two most favored additions to the Phase 90 circuit by modders included. It most like *is* a Phase 90 clone too, and you won't lose any real estate on the pedalboard. Not bad at all.

Re: Better Phase 90

What do you think the difference between depth and level is?
Level is, well, level. It controls the output level, something the MXR/Dunlop doesn't have. It's a fixed resistor in those.

The depth controls the sweep but how much through the frequence range gets phased, kinda like a chorus depth, same principle.

The manufacturers site says it's "based on the classic 4 stage Script circuit with a few additions for a more versatile pedal."

Seems blatent enough to me. :)
