Better pup choice

In my 2017 Gibson SG, I was going to put in a set of Whole lotta humbuckers, however I looked up some Youtube vids and sampled the vids in Seymour Duncan products and they sound just a tad too clean, I would rather have a little more "crunch & sustain" without going "heavy Metal". So more suggestions please.....

Re: Better pup choice

They are Gibson pups, they suck. Not to mention this SG came with the circuit board which is notorious for failure, cheap crappy solder joints and crap "mini" components, all doomed to fail. I removed it and put in quality electronics hand wired.

You do you, but you have been woefully misinformed.

Maybe you could ask the dude doing the video to turn the gain up a bit? :D

When we ask what you don't like about the pickups, telling us the brand name doesn't help, we already know. What pickups do you currently have? What do you hear that you don't want to hear out of the current pickups? What don't you hear that you would like to hear out of the new pickups?

Um - yeah. That's not a reason why the pups are no good. That's just someone saying "I'm not even gonna answer the question because I can't, I just want to jump on the Gibson hate wagon"

Just because it's Gibson does not mean it is bad: 500T, Dirty Fingers, BB 1/2's, P-90's. Gibson makes quite a number of good pickups even if you don't like the sound.

Saying "I hate 500T's because they will fall apart and are no good" is ridiculous. Saying "I don't like 500T's because they are too hot for my taste/style, they are kind of tight, and I really find the highs harsh". That is a reason I can respect.

Is there some reason the internals fail? Haven't heard that. in fact, I doubt anyone has been using them long enough to know how long they last. Saying "I just want hand wired analog p2p by CTS etc. That's a legit reason.

And as far as I'm concerned, you don't need a legit reason. But say so. And if you tell us what you don't like, we'll be able to steer you to the right pups much much better,

Re: Better pup choice

I can't stand those loose-around-the-wrists long sleeves when playing guitar. (like the video guy)

Re: Better pup choice

i have the WLH in an Orville LP and they do not lack any crunch or sustain. They sound great!

Re: Better pup choice

WLH's have plenty of crunch and sustain. They're Zeppelin PU's. You need to listen to clips/videos with more gain.

Early Rush is another great example of tones that WLHs excel at. I installed a set in my 335 earlier this year and they nail the All the World's a Stage tone.

^^This.

WLH can be as crunch as you want.

LP w/WLH’s > OR-15..... no dirt pedal, just amp dirt.

Re: Better pup choice

I had WLH in my SG for over a year because they were that versatile and handled every gig I had at the time. I would try them before ruling them out. If they sounded clean in a demo, I would expect the test guitar or amp was bright. WLH have a sweetened and soft top-end compared to most other humbuckers I’ve tried. And SGs are on the warm side, so I wouldn’t expect WLH to be ‘clean’ sounding (or ‘bright’ if that is the actual issue)

Another option that I’ve tried in my SG for what you are describing is a JB with an A2 in the bridge and a stock Jazz neck. Great hard rock setup.

I’ve also tried a poor mans Saturday Night Special set which is a ‘59 set with A4 magnets installed. Pretty good rock and roll setup.

Another affordable option might be a stock ‘59 bridge with a Seth or Pearly neck.
