Better to suck or blow?

The Duke Of Trades
I've got a fan right on top of my power tubes that was set up from the factory to suck air across the tubes down into the headbox. I thought that this was less than optimal, so I reversed the fan to blow directly on the tubes, with the exhaust air going out the vent in the back. Am I right or wrong on this? Suck or blow? :laugh2:

Re: Better to suck or blow?

I agree, blowing is better.

Re: Better to suck or blow?

So, if your fans blowing out, what's blowing air in to cool the inside of your amp?

Well...nothing. :laugh2: There's only on fan, and it's right on top of the power tubes. The fan doesn't do much other than cool the tubes.

Re: Better to suck or blow?

I would blow air into the amp because that'll make the pressure slightly higher inside the amp and it'll keep dust out. Sort of like how PC's blow in for that reason.

Who cares about the fan, how bout the amp? Curious to hear what you think of the Shiva?

I love it! The gain channel rules, and the cleans are the best I've ever heard! :)

Re: Better to suck or blow?

hmm maybe im going wrong looking at a new guitar.. maybe sell everythign and get a bogner?

:scratchch

Re: Better to suck or blow?

the main idea is to create an airflow. I dont' buy the dust argument because I've had some of the world's dirtiest PC's in my house that only blew in.

Whichever method removes heat the most effectively is the one to go with.

i'll buy your guitar port for 30 quid

haha no!

the bogner would be too loud for the house so i'd need that for practising, and recordings just easy with it :D

sorry man.. GET YOUR OWN :saeek: :saeek: :laugh2: :laugh2:

Re: Better to suck or blow?

You should find that "sucking" is much better. I did some tests a couple of years ago with a mesa head, a fan and a probe thermometer. Sucking the hot air out was much more efficient. End of story.

Re: Better to suck or blow?

oh, but you (of course) need to make sure it's not anywhere near airtight, otherwise the hot air exits the case and immediately gets sucked back in because of the negative pressure.

It's not quite that simple, but you need an inlet of some description...

Re: Better to suck or blow?

yea, i find that my computer is coolest with both blowing and sucking going on, there needs to be an equal inlet of cool air if you want optimum cooling.

Re: Better to suck or blow?

Why would you want to cool the tubes down???? Thae sound soooooo good when they are hot!!!!!!

It´s not the heat that causes the tone, but the amount of current flowing through the tubes. Like with (almost) every electrical product, heat is an unwanted side-effect.

3 good Reasons to cool tubes:

1. Longer tube life
2. Safety concerns (fire hazard if too hot)
3. Beer on amp at gigs stays cooler

And there are probably more ;)
