Beyond the JB Jr.

Hi Community - I write for a pickup recommendation. I have a Strat with p-ups, neck to bridge, Dimarzio Area 61,Dimarzio Area 61, SD JB Jr. At first I loved the JB Jr., rarely used anything else. I've come to really prefer the selector between the mid-Area 61 and the bridge JB Jr. The JB Jr. is a hair too bright and thin for my taste, bringing in the mid Area 61 adds warmth and body to the notes. What can I swap in for the JB Jr. that has more warmth AND sparkle but doesn't get darker?I want girth in power chords but also clear sustain, response to pick attack, and good substance and harmonic content in solos. Gee, I guess I want everything. What do you recommend? Thanks - Bob

That's a tough one. I find the other "Little" humbuckers to be on the dark side. If you're willing to consider rails/blades from DiMarzio as well as Seymour Duncan, then you should be able to find what you're looking for in their lower output offerings.

Have you tried hooking up a tone knob to your bridge? You might achieve zen by rolling a bridge tone knob down slightly.

DiMarzio fast track 2 leaps to mind. Wire it so that when it is in parallel with the middle pickup, it goes into parallel mode instead of series, or alternatively, wire it so both it and the middle pickup split in that position. If you don't know how, DiMarzio can send you a diagram.

Thanks y'all! Grist for the mill, food for thought. A different alternative from Keith Holland at the Guitar Hospital in Los Gatos CA: he suggested that I just put a full size humbucker in the bridge position (SD 59 his recommendation) - but I'll explore all your ideas...thanks again.

Re: Beyond the JB Jr.

Be sure to look into the Seymour Duncan "Trembuckers" if you decide to go that route, no pun intended.

Re: Beyond the JB Jr.

If you go for the humbucker route, you could try the Stagmag. Its great for chords and leads in humbucking mode, and the cleans are amazing, really crisp and clear.
