biasing preference?

I thought I would see where you guys like to bias at? Little hot, little cold, or right on? I'm useing a pair of 6L6 winged C's and I'm running them a little cold right now. It sounds a little crisper and punchier to me. My plate voltage is 340 and I have the current biased at about 35.

thats way low for 6L6 running at only 340v. but, if you like it, go for it.

oops. i should help educate here, too. find an ohm's law calculator somewhere on the net, that also includes watts.
lets say the max plate dissipation for a 6L6 is 30 watts (it is, actually dependent on type). type that in. next, input your voltage. 340. calculate. you get .088A or 88mA. this is for one tube. double that. 178ma. take 60% of that (close to AB1, but well within spec), and you get 106.8mA. so somewhere between 45 and 50mA is a nice number. now, this is for a screen voltage of 75% of the plate voltage. higher screen voltages will require lower bias current draw. laterz!

oops again. that bias point shoudl be per tube.

Thanks man. I came up with the same calculation but it didn't sound tight like it used to so I just played with it a while and that is where it sounds good for now. I have noticed though that my ear changes after I play over time and things dont sound as good as I thought they did.

I know a lot of folks that will get the bias set low and just bump it up a bit at a time and listen to the results until they get it where it sounds the best.

If your ears are telling you it's all good, then it's all good (in your situation). Sometimes your ears will settle in on a really hot bias and you have to kind of decide how valuable your tubes are.
