Big Amps at home?

Re: Big Amps at home?

Who here practices or regularly uses a big amp (50 watts or more) at home? How do you play without annoying the neighbors or damaging your ears but still manage to get good tones? Do you have a dedicated room for it?

If you crank a 25 watter........ you should be able find a way to get along with a 50+ watt amp.

I've got a couple of 50 watters, a couple of 100 watters. As long as the wife & kids are out of the house, I crank'em. When they're in the house I play through an eleven rack or Amplitude. Not the same, but for those situations they can't be beat.

I play though a Mark V head with a 2x12 recto cab and a Marshall Power Brake. It's in the basement.

Re: Big Amps at home?

I just use a smaller amp for practicing, which unfortunately these days is not very frequently, and I crank up the big amps with the 4-12 cabs only for recording sessions, when I want the big amp tones. Recording sessions are even more infrequent, so the neighbors have not complained.
At some point it would be cool to put up soundproofing in the walls in my home studio, but that's a big expense I don't have the funds for right now, so I let 'em wail and hope no one minds.

All day, everyday.

Played my new JVM210H through my huge Krank 4x12 this morning.

Thumpalicious and crunchastic.

Re: Big Amps at home?

I have to use an overdrive with my Mesas and my Marshalls to get to where I need to be when I'm at home.

Live, only the Marshalls would need the overdrive but I seldom gig with my Marshalls.

I've been playing for 25 years and I still have all of my hearing :)

Re: Big Amps at home?

I like 6L6 amps, the two I own are ~45 watts (Fender Bandmaster) and 60 watts (Bogner Shiva). I use them live all the time, and thankfully get to crank them with a cab mic'd off stage in isolation. I use them at home occasionally to record with the volume knob backed off a bit, otherwise I use Amplitube/Logic. I practice unplugged, and don't even own an acoustic anymore.
