The Big Apple Strat is supposed to have a 59n and Pearly Gates Plus for the pickups - right???

I have three dual humbucker Strats

#1 is a "real" Big Apple Fender and I always assumed it had the 59n and Pearly Gates Plus combo.

#2 is a MIJ Dual Humbucking Fender Strat I modded with Duncan Pearly Gates neck and Duncan Custom and a couple of series/single/parallel switches I added - one for each pickup. That one is on permanent loan to my buddy AJ.

#3 I also have a MIJ Strat with a PGn and EVH/78.

Anyways, the switch went bad in my Big Apple and since I need to change it, I ordered the special Fender switch and opened the Big Apple up this morning to repair the switch and install some different pickups.

I'd been mulling over what pickups I want to install in the Big Apple.
And in my mind I decided I'd like to hear a SH-2 Jazz neck and a SH-5 Duncan Custom.

I removed the pickguard and that's what Fender had already installed in my Big Apple: a white SH-2 Jazz neck and a white SH-5 Duncan Custom!

What a surprise!

I'm still going to see if I can make some mods though. I'm going to install a 500K master volume and 500K master tone with a .02 tone cap and then install a Fralin blender pot instead of the extra tone pot.

The five way switch allows me to combine pickups and get:

Neck humbucker,
neck single,
both humbuckers,
neck and bridge pickups single
bridge humbucker

With the blender pot I'm hoping I can switch to the neck and blend in a little or a lot of the bridge pickup. And with the bridge pickup chosen, I'd like to be able to blend in a little or a lot of the neck pickup. I think I can do it.

But what blew my mind is that this guitar already has the pickups I was going to change to!

Mine is in mint condition and has never been altered, as near as I can tell from looking at the wiring and solder joints.

Anyone else ever seen one stock from the Fender factory with a Jazz neck and Duncan Custom instead of a 59n and PG+?

LOL, that's funny. I've never seen anything from Fender that wasn't a PG+/'59n.

This is my only Big Apple so it's the only one I've seen - but it sure was funny to see the pickups I was going to install to improve the tone already in the guitar!

BTW, Evan had mentioned that he thought maybe one pickup in a Big Apple had to have the magnet reversed to work properly with the Big Apple wiring design. http://www.guitarnuts.com/wiring/big_apple.php

That is not the case with my guitar. Both pickups seem to be stock and to have the same polarity as my other Duncans - one was not reversed.

Re: Big apple strat = big surprise!

If only that were true, one swap I need to do would be done already...:D

Re: Big apple strat = big surprise!

Was the original idea for the pickup swap a desire for better tone? Or is it that because you now know what's in there, you'll leave them be?

Re: Big apple strat = big surprise!

the big apple strats never came with a Jazz neck and a custom. Are you sure a previous owner hasn't swapped the original pickups out for them?

?

FWIW, the '59 neck on the Showmaster FAT HH ('59rp/pg+) comes stock reversed in polarity....

All I know for sure is that what's in the guitar now is a Jazz neck and a Duncan Custom - both are white and the soldering on the switch looks totally originally.

Regardless of how well a guy or gal can solder, when a pickup is removed and a new one installed the terminals on the switch never look quite as neat as they originally did before the change.

This one looks totally original.

Re: Big apple strat = big surprise!

maybe the electronics were totally swapped out (pots, switches, everything)?

Re: Big apple strat = big surprise!

Does this make you rethink your choices? Seeing how you wanted to change the pups in there and then selected the same ones means this guitar must sound different from what you thought it should or something. If you knew before what these were ,would you have selected something else?

Re: Big apple strat = big surprise!

The Big Apple Strat uses a 250K tone pot for the Duncan Custom pickup and that makes for a tone that's not as bright as the Duncan Custom in my other Strat which only has two 500K pots (master volume and master tone).

Also, when you combine the neck and bridge pickup and each pickup also has its own tone control, you also combine the two tone controls. If you combine two 500K tone controls in parallel that's kind of like having one 250K tone control and you'll lose treble.

One reason why when you combine the neck and middle pickups on a Strat or combine the neck and bridge pickup on a Les Paul you get a tone that's not as bright as either pickup by itself.

That doesn't happen on my other Strat because it only has a master volume and master tone and not two tone controls.

I think what I didn't like about the Big Apple tone: the warmer tone from the bridge pickup due to it's having a 250K tone pot.

I like 500K pots with humbuckers - both neck and bridge.

So I'm going to rewire this Big Apple with 500K pots throughout and see if that does the trick for me.
