Big 'Bird makeover

Wattage

High Voltologist
I replaced the broken reflector knobs with a full set of speed knobs.

Then I swapped out the stock neck and bridge pickups with an SD Vintage FB neck and a Seymourized FB bridge. I disconnected the middle position and dropped the pickup down so it is out of the way. The difference these pickups made is just incredible, more clarity, definition and a huge tonal range. The original pups had a nice output and were pretty fat sounding but rather muddy with very little high end definition. The guitar sounded good but it's unamplified sound made me think there was a lot more to be had out of it, I had no idea how much.

While I was at it I replaced the stock pots, still 500k, I put in new .022 caps and cleaned up the bird's nest of wires that Epi shipped it with.

For now I've taken the bar off. It works fairly well for light stuff but fronting the band and steering this thing with the bar is a little messy. Now I can just play it without thinking too much. I was also able to find a replacement truss cover for it since it was long gone when I acquired the guitar. I had to drill new holes for the cover but there are no visible reminders. Next will be a bone nut and then maybe those cool new Kluson banjo style Firebird tuning pegs.

Oh yeah I removed the Epi Dodo bird from the guard, it looked a little Gumby-ish compared to the real Gibby bird.

First, good move removing the bird.. Always looked goofy to me on those as well.. Knobs are much better IMO! Very cool that you felt the untapped potential and were able to bring it out!! I LOVE when that happens! I have an EPi LP that is bad A now, (Came with Gibson pups) so Im hesitant to mess with it.. But I keep thinking, if its that good now......

Anyhow, Awesome axe ya got there bro!! congrats!!

Re: Big 'Bird makeover

Nice! Very nice! I did something similar with my 'bird, but kept the middle pickup and used stock Gibson type wiring. I used Antiquities, which gave it a touch of Fendery spank to it, similar to Seth / PAFs. I don't mind the bird on the guard, but I haven't seen if the Epi one is really different? But either way, very nice 'bird, congrats!

nice! always loved firebirds. the sm3 bridge pup is cool. how does it match up with the sm1 neck? the sm1 is a two magnet like the originals, the sm3 is one magnet with blades so kinda different. ive heard both and like them but dont think ive seen them together in a bird before

Nice ! I love it. I have the SM1n and the SM3b in a Parkwood PWH4. They came stock and I absolutely love 'em! It is a semi-hollow LP type guitar. A Bird is on my guitar bucket list. If I ever get one, I would want to do this to it. Beautiful Bird, Man!

I didn't plan it out to use these pickups but I'm really glad I did. I pulled them out of a Hofner Club bass my buddy is selling, they're a great upgrade for a Cavern or a Club btw. Since they were kicking around I figured I'd give them a shot before going out and buying something else. I really wanted to see if I was right about the stock mini's. The neck position is a bit rounder and a little more 3D-ish than the bridge but they really work well together. The bridge is crunchy and full and just about all the things I want out of a bridge pickup, Angus/Mal sounds are cake. Jimi-ish/Schon neck tones are easy to get and they have a nice usable blend in the middle, kind of Uncle Ted if I hit it right.

I'm kind of smitten with this thing right now. It's is a little like backing a boat trailer up in a tight space maneuvering around with it but it's a lot of fun too. Even being the Epi version it's pretty striking.

Reminds me of a '59 Caddy

Do Epis really have a different bird graphic than the Gibsons? I thought they were the same. And what did you use to remove the bird?

Re: Big 'Bird makeover

That's a sweet looking guitar and you did a nice job with your upgrades. Now play that bird with a burning desire to inspire!

It is the same design but not so crisply executed, makes it look really cheap IMO. To remove it I just wet sanded the guard with some 1500 paper, came off clean in about 30 seconds.

Re: Big 'Bird makeover

Great looking changes. Bet that does sound real nice. Always dug the mess out of Firebirds but that hump above the neck pickup area was a bit much. Explorers and that style hit that point better for me.
