Gentlemen . . .

. . . just curious this time round !

Is 15inch speakers the biggest guitar amp speakers you can get ina mom & pop type store without special ordering some 21's :smokin:

Come to think of it, what is the biggest speakers out there that will compliment a guitar tone ?

I have an idea (again :omg: :33: ) but want to get some more facts before i let the cat out the bag, so to speak !

Thanx
;)

Yes, 15's are probably the biggest "guitar" speakers you'll find. 18's are pretty common, but are designed as "bass" speakers either for the low end of PA systems, or bass guitar.

Someone on here just got a great deal on an old Music Man 1x18 horn-loaded bass cabinet and said it sounded good for guitar. The problems with using 18's (or even bass-oriented 15's) for guitar are:

1) Efficiency - since 18's are not really designed to cover guitar's frequency range, they won't be as loud as a 12 that is.

2) Beaminess - is related to frequency in relation to diameter. At the guitar's relatively high frequencies, an 18 will be beamier than a 12.

LOL back in the 70's Electro voice made a few 30'' or 36" speakers!
As I recall- they were made for the keyboardist Lee Michals- I think he only used them a few times- seems like there is a funny story connected with that, but I don't remember it- but I did see Lee one time- it was just him, and a drummer- my ears are still ringing to this day!

I remember John Paul Jones telling a funny story about big speakers - and people wanting Zep to try out (and endorse) their latest whiz-bang gear. He talked about somebody bringing in a bass rig with a 30" speaker and said, "It lasted 2 songs and then, roll out the Acoustics." LOL

THANX FOR ALL THE HELPFULL INFO, EVERYONE !!!

I am playing around with an idea !

Guitar -->pedals -->ABY Box -->Guitar amp head + 4x10 or 2x12 cab, in (((stereo))) with a Bassamp head + 2x15 cab (or bigger ?).

I know there are muso's that does this kind of thing, but what do you guys think of such a set-up ???
(let's forget about the extra hassle at set-up time, and break-down at gig's !)

Many Thanx
;)

Re: Biggest "over-the-counter" speakers ?

i've got some 18" JBLs that sound pretty good with guitar

Re: Biggest "over-the-counter" speakers ?

BTW Randall amps makes a cab with a 15 and 2x12's all in one- aimed at players that use dropped tunings- seems like they haven't sold all that well, you may be able to pick one up cheap, but be forwarned- it is a large, heavy beast.
Its the RS125XL-

That looks like a very good option for what i want to do !!!

Thank you very much for the link !

And i see what you mean by a lil' heavy !
At 88pounds, ermmm, that is +/- 40kg's, that monster in NOT a light cab !
But i do have a huge pick-up truck (huge in SA standards anyways) so transport is not a problem - getting an idiot to carry it from pick-up to stage and back is the problem !!!

Cheers

Re: Biggest "over-the-counter" speakers ?

That Randall 2x12/1x15 cab sounds interesting as hell. Perhaps this niche cab style will grow in poplularity. I would not mind that one bit! This cab sounds great as a concept...but may very well be perfected with different speakers in it...chosen by the player.

People have tried to use soley 15" speakers for guitar amplification, and the tone is generally considered to be "tubby", and loose...by most people.

For that matter, It would be great to see a 2 speaker cab 1x12/1x15! I yanked the crispy Celestion V30's out of my Mesa vertical Recto cab, and installed a heavy EVM12L (14-16lb. magnet or so ), as well as a Eminence "Swamp Thang". Speaker choice is critical these days, because there are so many choices, and modern guitar music is seems to be going downtuned, and "darker".

Re: Biggest "over-the-counter" speakers ?

biggest speaker I have ever seen is 72"
I think it had 10 voice coils and 10 amps that ran 1000w RMS each.
Now thats a bass rig

Re: Biggest "over-the-counter" speakers ?

btw, you can get the Randall R125CX cab in the same configuration for about half the price of the XL- it's all Eminence loaded speakers instead of the Celestions.
