Biggsby question:

Hi; if a hollow guitar is available with a Bigsby, or without (having a trapeze tail piece instead) which would you get? I imagine the trem would spoil the tone by damping the body, any thoughts? (it's the Gary Clarke Epiphone Casino I'm thinking of getting, but if you know of an alternative that's better, please tell me)

Re: Biggsby question:

Bigsbys have no major discernable difference on tone. The only downside to having one is that they need to be well setup to have good tuning stability.

Re: Biggsby question:

Yeah, the tuning is a big deal. Some can be set up to be in tune relatively well, but it isn't like it is without one, or with another type of trem. It might be different with bigger strings and a wound 3rd. I like the sound of Bigsbys, but I hate taking care of it. You'd think by now they would re-engineer the trem idea for a hollowbody.

Re: Biggsby question:

I love bigsbys on semis.
The only downside is the same downside you get on any trem system. You have to know how to stretch your strings properly for tuning stability and when they do go out of tune, know how to pop them back in without always grabbing the tuning keys.
If you can do that, and keep the nut lubricated, you will have a great time with a bigsby equipped axe.

Re: Biggsby question:

A bigsby might well change tone......by comparison to some other arbitrary tailpiece. But you'll have a bridge on the top too, and even another tailpiece will have to be connected to the guitar somehow.

The guitar vibrates as a whole.....using stored energy as string/body tension as well as the plucked energy to create sound and sustain. Its a very complex process. The only part which is certain is that poor connections between hardware and body create much larger energy losses that loose ones. So a well fitted bridge or tailpiece is the key, whatever that might be.

Re: Biggsby question:

I would get a trapeze version with no holes or extra wood block in the body just for the bigsby. You can always use a vibramate to add a bigsby later.
