OH YEAH MAN!!! I had opened it in another tab and kept reading the other posts but I just went back to it and GOOD GAWD those are some hot lookin' teles! Yeah, I didn't need much of a push in the right direction to get the Bigsby, rather I just was looking for some moral support to further justify my addiction... haha... but thanks for the pics, they're sweet! :beerchug:

Re: BIGSBY... Discuss...

Yeah for sure. Whenever I need a reminder of what is sorely missing from my tiny (but good) collection of guitars, I think about that page and sigh.

Re: BIGSBY... Discuss...

I've got a Bigsby on my old ES-330. If you take the time to set up your guitar properly you shouldn't have issues.

I put liquid teflon on a q-tip and work it into the moving parts, I also coat the saddles and nut with it.

For restringing it's much easier if you use a pen or pencil and pre-bend the strings.

Personally I love the effect it is very useful to me because it is so subtle.

I think I know the owner of that guitar....really how many Johnny Atomics can there be who love Teles?

Re: BIGSBY... Discuss...

i don't think they look clunky, i think they look like the equivalent of a huge blower stickin out of the hood of a car

as far as the range, it's not really so much of a trem as it is a vibrato bar, it's nice for giving a little shimmer now & then. Personally i don't like trems where you can go up or down more than a full step, divebombs are useless to me

as far as fr's, well, i don't want anything on my guitar that makes me have to use a locking nut & require a wrench to change a string

another good thing about bigsbys, you can put the bar in a cerain place & it STAYS THERE, you don't have to fish for it

Re: BIGSBY... Discuss...

I have a Bigsby loaded tele and generally... on most days it's pretty kool. I've found that I play a bit differently on the bigsby tele then a 'normal' Tele... tones a good bit different, having that big bar there changes the whole feel & right hand approach to some degree too...

Tuning wise... Bigsby's can either be a total nightmare or fairly stable... My tele is pretty stable most of the time. Pre-stretching strings (even after breaking them in) and making sure all the grooves & friction points is pretty key... but I really think the tailpiece has to be installed JUST right to avoid binding and the really 'nightmareish' issues...

Either way, after tweaking anything... action, neck angle etc... that Tele takes a few days to really settle in and hold tuning for a while. For the first day or two it wanders a lot... after that it's pretty freakin' stable.

Re: BIGSBY... Discuss...

Yeah, to some they might look cool but at the end of the day they are still an under-engineered peice of garbage.

They are trash. If you want the same effect they offer, there are ALOT better trem units out there that will do what a Bigsby does and a whole lot more and still stay in tune.

If you just dig the look and you dont want to really use it, go for it I guess.

Re: BIGSBY... Discuss...

They always strike me as being either a medieval dental device, or a frame straightener for '58 Chevy's.

I don't care for them. ;)

Re: BIGSBY... Discuss...

They look good on big hollow bodied guitars, Gibson, Gretsch, ect.

.....on Teles and other solid bodied guitars they look like an "after-thought" Like fitting a side car on a crotch-rocket!

Re: BIGSBY... Discuss...

I've never liked the look of a bigsby...I find them pretty ugly...but I hate trems of any sort, as I find them useless for the music that I play.

Re: BIGSBY... Discuss...

had one on an old dearmond starfire. loved that guitar and never had any trouble with the bigsby. That bigsby stayed in tune much better than either of my strats and they stayed in tune pretty well.

Go for it, they feel great and make you learn to play in a different manner.

Re: BIGSBY... Discuss...

Hey Driz,
If you can recall I used to have 2 Gretsches both with Bigsbys. It was wayyyy back when you and I 1st started to play together at Southside. I used it for the same kind of stuff you want to use yours for and I remember you always digging it. I rarely had tuning issues. If anything after a long while it would go a touch sharp. that was my SilverJet that had a nice roller bridge and nice nut.

Now my Brian Setzer 6120SSU was bone stock and was less stable. I have never used a tele w/ a Bigsby, but you can have a Gretsch set up to be more stable with them. I assume the same for a Tele.

Oh BTW..... Remember these?!?!?! Boy if only I still had the SilverJet!!!

Re: BIGSBY... Discuss...

I've been thinkin of putting a Bigsby on the dean V i'm about to obtain. Dunno if i will tho...

Saw a Baritone Jaguar on the Bay with a Bigsby and it was szick. P-90 neck pickup, humbucker in the bridge, I 'wow'd.

Put one on your Tele. It will rock.
