Bill Lawrence L500XL vs. Seymour Duncan SH-13 Dimebucker

Has anyone here used both Bill Lawrence L500XL and Seymour Duncan SH-13 Dimebucker pickups at the bridge position? Which one is better for getting that Dimebag-ish sound? (I am a HUGE fan of Pantera & Dimebag Darrell :) ). And has anyone wired any of these to a Triple shot mounting ring? How do I install one of these pickups and a triple shot mounting ring at the bridge position of a guitar with 3 pickups (H-S-H), 5-way selector switch and 1x volume,1x tone controls? Setting these to a guitar with 2 humbuckers, 3-way selector switch, 1x volume and 1x tone control would be helpful, too. Cheers!

Welcome.

I believe Dimebag used the Bill Lawrence USA version. I have these in my Jackson RR1. It works. I'm not sure if it's the best. I bought a guitar that came with an SH-13, but to me they sounded similar enough that I sold the SH-13 and installed the OEM pickup that came with the guitar.

If you really want to sound like him, match all of his gear - amps, cabs, guitars, pickups, strings, tunings, etc.

Someone else will need to answer the rest.

Well the Bill Lawrence L500XL is what Dimebag actually used for most of what we know. He used both the Bill and Becky Lawrence L500XL and the Bill Lawrence USA L500XL.

I saw a video of Dimebag where he says the L500XL's he got were purchased from Stewart McDonald- which would have been the Bill Lawrence USA L500XL's, and what would be in the actual Cowboys from Hell and FBD driven Dean ML's.

When Washburn made his guitars, Washburn used the Bill and Becky Lawrence L500XL's. I saw the purchase orders.

The Dimebucker was developed when he was in Damage Plan when he was developing a new sound with his KRANK amplifiers that would sound good both with his KRANKS and Randalls. The story is it was getting harder to get the L500XL's he liked from either company, he had some changes he wanted made, so that's how the Dimebucker came about.

So the answer is both are good for the Dimebag-ish sound since he used both.

I haven't tried the Dimebucker, but I have both a Bill and Becky as well as Bill Lawrence USA L500XL, and the Bill Lawrence USA L500XL nails Dimebag's tone better- the Bill and becky sounds similar to a JB

Actually, it was developed when he was in Pantera (and playing Randall). Check out Lisa Sharken's interview. This was done before Damage Plan and his Krank deal.

I hope that helps.

I own a Dime 3 Washburn 3-ST Stealth with the XL-500. I have played Dime 3's with the Dimebuckers. The Dimebucker is hotter and brighter. I have the Alt 8 in my MG 104 and head to head it will nuke the heck out of both the Dime pickups!!

I've only tried the BL USA 500XL and it totally nails the Dimebag thing, I love it. One of my favourite pickups, and one of the cheapest too!

Hey Ascension what's up? You guys might consider WCR's Iron Man pickup, the ceramic wound one, it get's a great tone and I only heard it through a Roland Cube at the LA amp show in '07!!

Hmmmm.

Many of Bill and Becky's Pickups are focused on Transparency, and letting the Natural tone of the guitar shine through, unlike some PU that have there own Character and tone.

Try the L500XL from Bill Lawrence USA or The Bill and Becky Version.

But from what I have read, The Bill and Becky Version sounds a bit better than the Bill Lawrence USA, cause its Bill Lawrence Himself from Bill and Becky who designed that pickup.
