Bill Lawrence L500XL

Re: Bill Lawrence L500XL

The Bill Lawrence USA are the ones used by Dimebag, Nuno and others.
They are still made with the original tooling and using the original materials.
They ARE good pickups, ask Dan Torres....he sells 'em!

Willi Stich changed the recipe and now uses an A5 magnets. The tone IS indeed a bit different and many people love the Willi Stich version more. I'm not saying one version is better than the other, but when people ask about the ORIGINAL pickup, then it's the BLUSA one period. No other argument needs to be given : original tooling + same materials

Willi Stich changed the recipe! Probably for the better, but those are NOT original ones anymore.

Read reviews of both pickups and you'll ignore him.

Re: Bill Lawrence L500XL

I am not going to look it up (because I really don't care), but supposedly whomever was teching for Dime back then was the one ordering the pups from StewMac, and the story goes Dime could never get the same sound as his number 1, and perceived the pups quality as the problem.

Dime's belief that BL's quality was slipping was what led him to Duncan. Supposedly Dime's number 1 had the B&B, and the rest had the BLUSA.

The thread even had close ups showing the B&B in Dime's guitar.

Believe it, don't, it makes no difference to me. I have tried both in all the N4s I have and all I can say is the BLUSA is horrible pickup to my ears.

Re: Bill Lawrence L500XL

thanks again guys but i am really not interested on what humbucker dimebag darrel preferred because i am searching for my tone, not to copy his tone..
so what i would like to know is where or how can i order the following Bill Lawrence L-500XL (THIS ONE):
http://wildepickups.com/Wilde_Bill_s_Twin_Blades.html (scroll down and look for the l-500xl)

Re: Bill Lawrence L500XL

You don't care to spread bad info about the BLUSA and support WILLI STICH? I dunno why people always seem to take sides for the guy that plays the "victim" in most situations. Let's be honest, EZ WAJCMAN is a great businessman, he owns the "Bill Lawrence" name and still makes the pickup to the original specs. Back in the end of 80's and early 90's, the pickups were the same as the BLUSA are now (Willi Stich didn't modify them yet).

If you don't like the BLUSA fine, then you don't like the ORIGINAL pickup, but rather the modifications that Willi Stich applied to it over the years with his experience as a pickup builder. Both are GREAT pickups.

I am not going to look it up (because I really don't care)

Re: Bill Lawrence L500XL

Believe what you want, like I said I don't care. If you are happy with the BLUSA, good for you.

You name the problem: E.W. is a businessman trying to explore the name of someone who was not clever enough to protect his work.

Re: Bill Lawrence L500XL

Absolutely, but business is business and if you're not "clever enough to protect your work" don't try to come back at Wajcman few years later for selling the pickup you designed and that sounds so good. The BLUSA pickup is truly an underdog. For $50 it outperforms many Duncans, EMGs and Dimarzios. It is the original design usig a ceramic magnet and original tooling. I like mine a lot, sounds just like Nuno and Dime = perfect when I'm in that vibe.

I have tried the Dimebucker but it was WAY too harsh in comparison.
