Bill Lawrence USA vs. Original Bill Lawrence

Re: Bill Lawrence USA vs. Original Bill Lawrence

A friend of mine made sound sample of B&B (Wilde). I have used B&B in my single coil guitar and SD in my hb guitar. Don't know about the latest product from BL USA.

Re: Bill Lawrence USA vs. Original Bill Lawrence

I have used BL pickups as long as Duncans, I still buy from Bill & Becky.

Longer, my first replacement pickup was a BL.

i hear bill underwent another round of chemo and is back out of the hospital after a setback ... understand that he is back to work too (at age 80!) ... best wishes for a full and fast return to health for him

Yep, hard to believe he is still going and is involved in the everyday stuff there. Awesome guy, as impatient as I am, I will still order from him and wait it out over the USA ones.

As far as I recall: Becky and Bill sold some of the company to Lace Music. Because of his health issues.

I am not sure if this is still going on or not.

Nope, that fell through. I've ordered pickups since and asked about it in an e-mail.

Re: Bill Lawrence USA vs. Original Bill Lawrence

that's a good thing though right?

???

Not wishing for Bill's demise or anything (how cool would it be for him to be 100 and still winding pickups, if that is what he wanted to do), I hope the family can keep the business going.

No offense to Mr. Lawrence, but it seems to be the same bind he has always been in. He needs a larger organization for marketing, distribution and production, but he doesn't necessarily want to be an employee. The business relationship works for a while, but when it goes sour he disowns the products he designed for that company. The most often cited reason is the products he designed are no longer built to his specifications. I can understand not wanting a sub-standard product or something you didn't design being marketed under your name. But the issue of his intellectual property rights seems to be a recurring theme.

Good point, I think I'll order a few to stock pile while he's still involved in making them. That way I know they are made to his standards:cool2: I'm saying that with a little sarcasm, but still, it's kinda cool in an old school way that he is so hands on. But, it is also probably the reason it's always been a small Mom and Pop organization and not gotten the recognition of SD and DMZ (not that I doubt the quality standards of either of those operations).

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think Larry DMZ learned everything about pups from Bill Lawrence himself

Re: Bill Lawrence USA vs. Original Bill Lawrence

My first aftermarket pups were BL's in 1981, swapped out the pups in my Iceman for a 500L/500R set. I still miss that guitar and those pickups, pure Joe Perry sound.

What is made now that is closest to the originals? Far as I have seen they all have plastic surrounds now no?
