Bill Lawrences?

Re: Bill Lawrences?

I just received confirmation that my XL-500 shipped. Took 7 weeks so just be patient

Re: Bill Lawrences?

it seems they're all made to order. Bill's busy these days working for Fender, so I guess they wait until they accumilate enough orders to start building them

Re: Bill Lawrences?

Okay, so this could take a long while?

Also, I just want to make sure. These pickups have a nice heavy bottom, right?

Re: Bill Lawrences?

Hey guys. I'm not knocking anybodys' preferences, but how in the world do you stand the over-the-top "Niagara Falls" whooshing distortion of all of these megalo-output pickups? IMHO, playing through them sounds like a perpetual explosion--not very musical at all. Don't you ever crave TONE or MELODY?

Re: Bill Lawrences?

Well my L-500 XL arrived. On the back is a Made in USA sticker with a flag, a sticker with Bill Lawrence's signature, and another sticker that says L500 XL. Also came with a postcard from Becky. Come with mounting ring, instructions, wiring diagram. It doesn't have the screws on the back like I've seen on some of the others I've seen, instead the entire pickup appears to be held together with epoxy in a plastic case

Re: Bill Lawrences?

Well I installed the L-500 XL in my Korina bodied maple neck Floyd loaded Kramer baretta clone, and all I can say is.....WOW. It sings clearly, no signal dropoff due to the blades, and sounds hotter than an EMG 81. Roll off the volume and it cleans up nicely. Tone wise it sounds similar to a JB, but clearer, louder, hotter without mud and cleans up better when turned down. Very hot, I had to turn the level down on my tubescreamer.

In the same guitar I tried a Gibson '57 classic- dull and muddy. Next was a Dimarzio Tone Zone- nice, but too dark in this guitar. Next was a Dimarzio Evolution- brightened it up a bit, but still not satisfied until the L-500 XL.

The pickup is bright, but responds well to the amp's tone controls, so you just have to turn the treble down.

I'm playing therough a Marshall JCM 800, so no Dimebag tones yet until I put the 7 band EQ through the loop.

Bottom line- I waited 7 weeks, and it was well worth thr wait. I'm no considering ripping the EMG's out of my Les Paul and putting these in.

Mine sort of reminds me of a JB also. Except, the XL500 actually has a very tight bottom end that the JB dosent!
