Bill Steer's Pickups??

Re: Bill Steer's Pickups??

Thanks man. Didn't know about that youtube video. Thanks for the tip!
Always interesting to see bands and musician develop. I always thought Amorphis did a similar great job.

The funny thing about that YouTube video is that Ben, the guy who put it together, is now in Carcass! :biglaugh:

I saw them back in November. Absolutely stunning show. Hanging out on the bus after the show and chatting it up with the blokes over Newcastles was quite a highlight as well. Unfortunately, this tour stop (Grand Rapids, MI) was the worst turnout on the whole tour (252 tickets sold, I believe)... but as my grandfather said, if you can't say something nice... :)

Bill has a Duncan '59 in the bridge of his '79 Wine Les Paul now. While we were talking after the show, I asked him about the '77 and he said that it's fixed, but he prefers the feel and sound of the '79. He had the '77 with him, though, just in case. Horses for courses...

(Sorry for the dodgy cell phone pics. My camera gave up the ghost the day of the show... of course...)

Bill is now using a '61 Melody Maker with a Duncan '59 in the bridge...

From his latest email:
"The Melody Maker I'm using is an old one from 1961. Yes, the MM was always intended as a beginner's model, even more so than the Junior. But in my opinion the guitar itself is great. It's a very resonant slab of mahogany and the neck feels extremely comfortable to me. The "budget" aspect of the instrument is really down to the fact that all of the electronics were installed on the scratchplate. And that's why I didn't have any qualms about having alterations made to the guitar. Of course, there will always be collector types who would be appalled at what I've done to the instrument, but they're not coming from a player's perspective.

And yes, the lightweight feel of the guitar is a big plus too. Acoustically it's the loudest guitar I've owned. Some people think I'm nuts with this, but I've always felt that if a guitar sounds good unplugged, that's a strong start..."

@SWAMPROCK Thank you very much for sharing that.

I also follow the acoustic practice. I love having things in common with people I respect :D

I'm gonna get one of these things. I think I'm going to put a bridge that you can intonate in it though.
