Bit the bullet and ordered new strings

I have been a DR user since ... pssh, since they were just starting out and you could only get 'em at guitar shows. After a time, I gravitated towards Pure Blues and have been using Pure Blues 10s and 11s since about 2004.

I have always been interested in other high quality strings, though, and finally pulled the trigger on 4 sets of strings for my Tele and Strat; 2x Pyramid nickel strings and 2x R Cocco electric guitar strings.

Really looking forward to checking these out as I've heard nothing but great things about both companies.

Any Pyramid or R Cocco fans out there?

I'm replying to this, not as someone with any experience with the other brands you mention, but as someone was also a devoted DR Pure Blues user for years and is very interested in your impressions of these brands.

I'll be keeping an eye on this thread!

I would love to try both brands you mentioned but I hate the idea of getting into something like strings that I can't get local...

When I stopped using DR Pure Blues I switched to EB R-n-R for a while and liked them but after a while switched to GHS Burnished Nickel and thats where I am now, and I'm pretty happy with them!

I hate paying premium prices but I love Infeld superalloy guitar strings. I typically use GHS boomers for everyday use and slap the Infeld superalloy strings on for recording, gigging or for a first setup after a mod. There is no way I could afford to keep premium strings on all of my guitars at all times.

Im a DR man as well but if their is a better string out their let me know. I love DRs because they do last a while

i like the pyramids. I like the way they feel and the way they sound. They just don't seem to last very long, so i'm just using dunlops now cos they are cheap and work just fine.

I usually end up feeling this way except I usually gravitate back toward Dean Markley or EB slinkies. Except for Cleartones. I've currently got them on 2 different guitars. One is about a month into it and the Dean is around 6 months now. That's pretty amazing since I can kill a set of strings in a week w/ the acid my body leaks.

The deciding factor for me was due to string breakage. I needed to put a new set on my Strat, and the High E broke whilst tuning it. I thought, okay, it happens. Opened up another new set and put on another brand new High E string. Same thing happened! Now I am out $16 due to defective strings and with the prospect of yet another $8ish to spend, I decided to op out this time and see if there's an alternative.

I do not change strings often. I have 4 guitars that I rotate through regularly and that increases the longevity of string time dramatically.

If you find you do like the Pyramids Ben Tony says Thomann sells then for about £3.50 a set

I use D'Adarrio XL 115's & J17's. I have for years and Yes every once in a while I get a defective string that usually breaks when putting it on, but they sound really good & I get a lot of life out of them. I have tried others bit always seem to find y way back to these.

I have to go with Bludave on this. I used about every kind of strings I could find...but always go back to D'adarrios. EB's sound like worn out strings out of the box to me.

You would probably hate pure nickel strings, then. I am the opposite; I find steel strings to be overly bright and when they don't die gracefully at all.

Agreed.

D'Addarios sound ok when they're fresh, but they corrode too quickly. I've always referred to Ernie Balls as "super plinkys."

I need a pure nickel string. I never break strings so that's not an issue for me.

I gotta tell ya, I bought set of the High $ Pyramids last summer for my Strat. Green & White package. They sounded awesome, for about 12 hours. Super clear, but warm, amazing tone and feel. $17 bucks with tax at my local shop. a complete transformation in feel and sound.

The next morning my High E string was plinky and dead as if the ball end had come unwrapped (but it had not)...fiddled and fiddled..could not get rid of the plink. Put on a new high E I had laying around...boomer or something and voila, problem solved. Ripped the rest of the Pyramids off...for $4-6 a pack, I can live with an occasional dead string. For my first pack of $17 strings...and within 24 hours? No effin' way. German strings are Just like German cars--great feel and fun to drive, in the shop half the time and expensive to fix/replace. No thanks.

I have had horrendous experience with many sets of DR PB and TF strings too, but that is another thread.

I cannot use most pure nickel anymore as I grind down/notch the wounds in 8-10 hours or so of playing time. Lotta dead D strings for me with Pure nickel. I think I would go based on track record of longevity with GHS Burnished Nickel if I wanted to try pure nickel wrap again.

Yes, nickel strings will notch with a quickness if you do a lot of bending.

Which I do. So its just me throwing away 5 bucks every 2-3 days. FWIW, I like the RnR Slinky sets for tone in a pure nickel, also easy to find and reasonably priced. THE sound of the 60s. but they die quick, like all EB strings.

I bend a lot as well, but I still get a lot of life from my strings. Maybe I don't play enough.

Well have used both, the Cocco lasted long for me and sounded very nice!
The Pyramid was good, but somewhat uneven in the sound, and not always too good intonation wise...but good attack and such...
