Black LP - would you buy one?

Re: Black LP - would you buy one?

I have a black epi std.

It's my number 1 guitar and I think it will be until I can get an ebony les paul trad. pro.

I rock mine with black speed knobs, a black pickup selector ring, no pickguard, and red/black duncan 59's.

A black LP is one of those things for me... it just looks so sleek and sophisticated. not too flashy.

Same here, with different appointments. And mine is a Studio - IIRC. In any case, I left everything stock except I installed dual Duncan Distortions in it. I lowered the neck pup quite a bit and - surprisingly enough - I can get a very nice, warm clean jazzy sound out of it. Go figure...

You are right.

I'm sure they'd never paint a multi-piece body to hide a butcher block piece of wood.

I'm sure there isn't a 4 piece maple top under that coat of black laquer, or 5 blocks of mahogany under the white of an SG Custom. I'm sure they are using their best pieces of wood for these opaque colored guitars.

This is all pretty unlikely, and unproven.

There is a tiny grain of truth to this though. Guitar builders tend to save their best looking wood for the dye and burst tops, and put solid colors on the less attractive pieces. Visual appeal and tone have nothing to do with each other, however.

yup. just gotta play em. I mean, i know glue isn't the most resonant thing in the world but if my epiphone's made of 5+ pieces just because it's black (and it's an epiphone), I don't really care. The sustain of that sucker is well above my other guitars, and it's got a good sound. Other aspects of construction seems to just as important... one of the bigger differences between my epiphone and a gibson is the thickness of the maple top. I don't care if it's flame this or quilt that, but there's no denying that gibsons have a much thicker top than the veneer on the epiphone. That thick maple does a lot for punch and clarity.
