hi, does anyone know how black metal musician get their sound? i'm completely new to effects pedals, since all i have is my trusty marshall amp and fender strat. ive narrowed it down to a few choices, what would you guys recommend?
+ Jim Dunlop DD-11 Dime Distortion
+ Jim Dunlop ZW-44 Wylde Overdrive
+ Boss Metal Zone MT-2
+ Jim Dunlop KFK-1 10-Band EQ

thanks!
bb

Re: black metal effects/eq?

Out of those, use them all except the Wylde Overdrive. Put all low eq's to their max, scoop as many mids as you can, put the highs anywhere from 7-10 (depending on how much of that you want), scoop scoop scoop scoop scoop some more...and use EMG 81 pickups. :D

Re: black metal effects/eq?

I would say that the boss metal zone is among the best for that, a few friends of mine use them for blackmetal bands and they sound great.

Re: black metal effects/eq?

would it sound good if i used it on its own - with my guitar/amp. sadly i've only got money to spend on one of those.
What about the MXR M-151 Double Distortion?

Yeah I would say the metal zone sounds good on their own. The before mentioned friends of mine only use them in their fx lineup. I'm not familiar with the mxr pedals but I have heard good things.

I don't think the Doubleshot Distortion is what you're after.

The one channel sounds similar to a Marshall AVT, the other sounds similar to the Dime Distortion. Both are really mid heavy sounds, which is pretty opposite to what you're looking for.

Re: black metal effects/eq?

which is the most versatile system above? im mainly going to use it for black/doom/death metal, but also maybe some blues,

I doubt you'll find anything that'll give you a good black/doom/death metal tone and still give you a good blues tone.

Re: black metal effects/eq?

ah ok :smack:
i think i'll go for a Metal-Zone, it's the cheapest one there from what i've heard sound pretty good!

Re: black metal effects/eq?

wait, what marshall amp do you have?

if it can give you a good ''classic rock'' type distortion and then you put an ibanez tube screamer in front of the with the level all the way up and little gain on the pedal you can get some heavy as anything tones.
Just ask Matt outta Shadows fall.High output Active pickups do help tho! I have an 81/81 set

Re: black metal effects/eq?

Wait up, what the HELL are you guys thinking? Black metal isn't scooped mids and heavy lows, its about a classical 80's metal tone, more mids and highs than anything, as far as my ears hear it. Depends on your blackmetal though, I'm talking Mayhem, Satyricon, Darkthrone, and the like.

Boss Metalzone.

Re: black metal effects/eq?

Yeah, you want crunchy and airy, almost buzzy. Mids and highs, some bass.

Re: black metal effects/eq?

It depends, give us some bands. Usually you'll have a rhythm player with a scooped sound and then a lead guy with a very mid and high oriented sound.

Re: black metal effects/eq?

Deicide and CC both use bass heavy tons with scooped mids, the others are different sounds to my ears.

You just want a classical Marshall metal tone, look into saving for a DSL or old 6100 Lead Model 30th anniversary head.

The Digitech Metal Master might be good too.

This thread got me to checking out it's sound clips, and it has a Metal Zone setting, as well as a scooped to hell Death Metal setting, so you'd get your lead and rhythm tone out of it.

The "Tour of Hell" setting is kinda interesting.
