Black Metal Pikcups.

Hey.
I got myself a Les Paul Custom. But! I play Black Metal, and those pickups ain't cutting it.
I'm looking for something with extreme gain, I mean pretty mindblowing gain.
I know this guy is using Seymour Duncans.
I think he was talking about SH-4's?
Anyways, I want something that sounds like that... Gutwrenching.
He also uses a Peavey 5150 II.
That's all I know.

How would I get that sound? Lots of gain for the black metal rhytm, but I also need something that is good to solo with.
Any ideas?

OT: Check out Hellish Outcast. They're releasing a new album soon, and it sounds sick. Amazing band ...

Re: Black Metal Pikcups.

Pickups don't have gain, they have output.

Amplifiers have gain.

Maybe you need a new amp? If you are playing some sort of Fender Tweed or something it's not going to sound like a 5150 II.

What type of Les Paul Custom is it? ESP? Epiphone? If it already has high output pickups swapping won't help much. You need to know what pickups you have first before you can make a change.

You want that tone??? A Duncan SH-6 and just about any guitar will get you that with a Line 6 amp. Add a boost in front of an already fizzy setting and you can have teh br00talz too.

Re: Black Metal Pikcups.

Get a Dimebucker, and a Krankenstein. No offense, but they really just sound like a Pantera copy band, anyway.

Re: Black Metal Pikcups.

Duncan Livewire Metal
Dimarzio Distortion
Duncan Distortion
Kent Armstrong/Wilburn Custom Shop M215
Dimarzio X2N
Duncan Invader

Er, why did you buy a guitar that you must have known would not suit your preferred style?

EDIT: idsnowdog is on the right path. I would add Blackouts (bridge/treble) and the Live Wire Classic II (neck/rhythm) to the list.

for that sound i vote the dimebucker or the distortion for passives. i would also consider emg 81 or blackouts original or emty. i would personly prefer a emg 85 or blackout abh1 neck in bridge or alt8. all those pickups are good for grooving and harmonics.

Re: Black Metal Pikcups.

Sorry, friend but that's not black metal.

And if you want a balls out passive, look at the DiMarzio X2N. Sounds amazing in mahogany to boot.

Re: Black Metal Pikcups.

Yeah, that's not black metal.

For *that* tone though in your guitar.. Duncan Distortion or Duncan Custom.

Re: Black Metal Pikcups.

I wonder if the OP is maybe just promoting this band Hellish Outcast.

Re: Black Metal Pikcups.

To the OP...that really doesn't sound all that high gain. If you quad track anything its gonna get thick and juicy. And since the 5150II has gain to spare, you could really run a lot of PuPs and get that thickness. And who ever said that a Les Paul wasn't suited for that type of music...what the hell are you talking about? A lot of metal is played using downtuned mahogony guitars. I play heavier stuff than that with my RG550....Oooops, I can't..its a shred axe...??? Anyways...

Passive PuPs:
SH-5
SH-6
Alt-8 (hate it myself)

Active PuPs:
EMG 81
EMG 85
AHB-1n in bridge spot
AHB-3

After that there's a myriad of small PuP makes that can get you there in spades...

BKP
MCP
Anderson
Suhr
Etc...

Re: Black Metal Pikcups.

The Full Shred sounded pretty traditional black metal to me. Lots of treble, less bass frequencies and enough definition for those triad chords.
It's not really über high output. Most black metal bands use distortion/boost pedals though.
For soloing it's a great pickup to. Kinda reminds me of a JB, but tighter.
