Black pickup ring for trembucker?

Re: Black pickup ring for trembucker?

Right on man. pm me your address and I'll get it out to you today if I can get out of my ass groove on the couch.. Getting up to find that got me about whooped.

Re: Black pickup ring for trembucker?

Those form-fitted rings that come with the dimebucker are awesome.
I don't know why SD doesn't sell a totally non-slanted version in the 1/8" and 3/16" heights.
They should include them when you buy a set of pickups,,,,,,,would be a good incentive to buy in sets.

Re: Black pickup ring for trembucker?

Yea I hear ya Dave that's why I always used Bill/Becky rings anytime I had a Dimebucker…
edit:
nevermind the Bill/Becky are slanted as well... the B/B and the dimebucker do have different mounting screw widths.. That's what I was apparently thinking about initially... Either way I wish they'd have more options..

I want to try a Duncan Distortion TB6 in my Washburn N24. It currently has a BLUSA L500XL in it, but I'm not real crazy about it.

The BLUSA pickups aren’t anywhere near as good as the Wilde version. The USA pickups sound thin and microphonic.

They all just have to have their own sizes for everything. So aggravating sometimes. I really don't know why SD used those bulky "wood-screws" for the Dimebucker height adjustments. They should have just used metal inserts in the baseplate with standard threading and regular height screws. That small bit of metal wouldn't have made any difference in inductance (or whatever the word is I'm looking for). I know part of that tone is being all plastic baseplate, but inserts would be even less mass than the screws themselves are.

The thing that really irks me though, is how much gaps there are when a Dimarzio (f-spaced or not) is installed in a standard size ring. I just mod Carvin rings for Dimarzio stuff now. They look better anyways being matte black and fitted.

Re: Black pickup ring for trembucker?

Whats even worse are the Charvel Model series from 87-89 which have a mounting ring big enough to house 3 single coils inside almost... Sucks cause I wanted to put an L500L in mine but there was just way too much gap and it looked nasty. I know that's no way to be, but it'll be getting a Full Shred or something to replace the Metal LiveWire so all's not lost...

Re: Black pickup ring for trembucker?

I wish Seymour Duncan would just join the rest of the world and use the same size bobbin with different pole spacing for Trembucker.

Also the color codes for the wires. DiMarzio did it first. Why not everyone just use those colors. It makes sense too, red is hot like fire, and green is ground like grass. Lol Easy to remember.

I like Carvin’s setup with three screws so you can angle the pickup and it won’t wobble.

Pickup makes are all stuck using Gibson’s 50 year old designs, and it’s dumb with the long legs and springs. Then the other problem is when players complain when you change something because it doesn’t look vintage. Guess what? It’s not. Vintage isn’t better unless you just want to pose in the mirror with your guitar! lol

Re: Black pickup ring for trembucker?

I learned a trick from a member on here many years ago and I forget who, to help with keeping a humbucker from sagging either way, you just take one (or both) height screws and give it a slight bend so it's sort of eccentric or out of round..
I lay mine on a flat surface and press down slightly with my thumb or a screw driver handle.. Doesn't take much and works like a charm.. Beats the hell out of folded paper or foam under the pickup especially on a pickguard guitar.

Not to mention their crazy locking nut designs! I've passed on so many of the old used Charvels just for that reason. I know how to mod them from seeing how others have, but I just don't need the hassle.

Re: Black pickup ring for trembucker?

I used a 97 RR3 neck on mine so I could have a real Floyd nut. The JT-6 works great but Im gonna swap in an OFR from an old Kramer as soon as I dig into this. But yea those Kahler behind the nut locking nuts can be a real pain... They do work much better with a better nut or atleast a properly filed nut, but still... ehhh...

Yea in all fairness they do work OK, mine really didn't have any stability issues. Like you said though, the nut itself needs filed to whatever gauges one uses, especially on the big wounds. At the time I had my orange-crackle I was in an experimentation stage with tuning and strings, so having a standard OFR nut would have been a lot better.

Then there's the trem's mounting studs being different also. My jackson trem was old and rusted so I figured it was a drop-in swap,,,,,,,,,,,wrong.
This was waaay before I had internet to do any research or find an old jackson in good shape.

Re: Black pickup ring for trembucker?

What year was your guitar? The 86 Model series had the Kahler 2520 trem which had tiny posts and a narrow spacing so I'm assuming that's what you had... The 87-89 JT-6 were the same as a Floyd... Then the 90-91 (92??) toothpaste logo had a Schaller which was also the same as you know...
I hated pre-internet days... Made trial and error a long drawn out process especially if you lived in an area that didn't have people who rocked out.
