Black White Red Green Bare & Sheild???

I just got a new JB for my strat and there is a Black, White, Red, Green, Bare, & Shield. 6 total. I thought the bare was the ground. Does the shield, which is a foil not a mesh, need to be grounded too???

No, just leave the shield alone

In a standard wiring

Green&Bare should be connected and grounded
White&Red should be connected and taped away
Black is your hot

I always wondered what the foil was for. Anyone know? RF shielding?

I think so. Probably serves the same purpose as the bare wire.

The foil surrounds all the wires, thus preventing any extra noise -- RF included -- from seeping in through the lead. The foil obviously touches the bare wire and thus the foil is grounded via the bare wire.

The foil is in physical contact with the strands of the bare ground wire. This is how the foil is connected to ground.
