Black Winter Magnet Swaps

Re: Black Winter Magnet Swaps

Well, it's definitely not 3 standard bar magnets. ;)

Besides, I think the Black Winters would sound their best with 6 magnets in a hybrid configuration...

Re: Black Winter Magnet Swaps

I assumed it was triple ceramic like the invader, possibly double thick like the distortion. But in reality, I don't think I would want to change the BW. I can't think of a voicing tweak I would want to do to it. Other than just because you can, (which is a reason that we all try sometimes) what changes are people feeling would be a positive change in the BWs? What sonic changes are people wanting? I can see trying to see if you could make a hybrid of BW and invader, for bigger bass. I don't want that, but I can see where someone might.

I have wondered if a single ceramic BW is a nazgul.

I actually tried that, as I found my taste in high output pickups waning a bit so I tried to tame it with alnico 2s (didnt have other spare magnets otherwise would have tried a5). They are actually quite good, similar to a JB2.

And yes they have 3 big ceramic magnets.

Want to sell the magnet set from the BW?

Re: Black Winter Magnet Swaps

What' the deal with spacer magnets added to a central bar? Do they all have to be the same or can one combine two different types? Ie. ceramic spacers (because I don't know of any other type available) along with an A5 or A8 bar?

Finding spacer mags in anything but ceramic is difficult there is a limit to how small an alnico can be and still hold a charge that is stable. Easier to use alnico center with ceramic spacers. I memory serves the iommi model uses a2 and ceramics

so despite the countless posts here and elsewhere, there is no real danger of keeping alnico magnets near ceramics, at worse oriented to repel each other. from the brief magnetics i know, the spacer magnets should be oriented in such a way that they would repel themselves from the main bar magnet, if put anywhere else.

Uuuum, I think that was the gist of my inquiry. Like: can you put an A8 in between two ceramics? Or an A5 or maybe best yet, a UOC8 between two C8 spacers? And if so, how would it affect the tone?

Re: Black Winter Magnet Swaps

So, OP, what are you hoping to achieve by mag-swapping the Black Winters bridge? Or is this one of those "just because" (also known as the "because I can") endeavors?

Its just an experiment to see how much different it sounds. The stock BW is my favorite pickup I've ever used, but I'm always curious on how different things can sound with a little tweaking.

Well its like everything else... It depends, How strong? how close? what length of time? What arrangement? Throwing mags in a drawer stuck together for a couple years they will degauss each other.

Yes you can, Why would you bother with UOC8 and ceramic though? Btw C8 is normal ceramic nothing special.

understood, but how closer can magnets get than inside a humbucker separated only by slugs & screws oriented in such a way that degaussing is very apparent. OK maybe ceramics can stand that, but always thought alnico mags couldn't survive that

Sorry I dont have actual numbers for you Ive never measured at what distance its an issue. I know anecdotally and empiracally that the Invader style arrangement with a alnico in the center and ceramics on the side works at minimum for a couple years without any issues. But ive never done nor am I inclined to do experiments to find the limit of how close 2 mags can be before they degauss.

Though I would feel confident in saying that the oft repeated danger of degaussing weak alnicos with ceramics is overstated... Neos on the other hand...

Re: Black Winter Magnet Swaps

Is this still trending? The Black Winter is a gift from the engineering deities that travelled across the harsh Scandinavian region to the famed "Tree Of Black Metal Tone". After walking over the decomposing corpses ( calm down, this is black metal after all ) of those that never reached the goal, they plucked the fruit of bone crushing tone from the notorious tree and put it in a pickup.

And you think you know better than them?

Re: Black Winter Magnet Swaps

I highly doubt it's an enamel wire. Likely poly and heavy poly, if it's a duet of insulations at all.

I think it's like an Invader when it comes to the mags. I have my own ideas about the Black Winter, Nazgul, sentient and Pegasus as to their origins (as well as the Perpetual Burn) but that's just speculation.

Re: Black Winter Magnet Swaps

Modding things from stock is just part of the American spirit. No matter how good something is from the factory, there is always going to be someone who wants to tweak it, if for no other reason than to make it uniquely one's own.

I'm just curious as to how they will sound, it that such a crime? Yes, they are amazing pickups as-is, best I've ever played imo, but I just love seeing how things are affected by small changes, always been that way.
