Black Winter or Nazgal in a RR1?

Re: Black Winter or Nazgal in a RR1?

Get the one that doesnt begin with a "B". If you read about the Winter, people are always saying lower it, change the pots, re EQ, yada yada. Thats because it sounds bad, all the extra you get out just doesnt sound good IMO. In a word, caustic and nasty. I much preferred the Naz

See, I don't think the BW sounds bad at all. In fact, I think it does a lot more and better than the Nazgul. But the Nazgul has a very specific EQ, and if that is your thing, then that is your pickup (and if you only play with tons of gain).

IKR? I seem to be the only person who liked the Naz more, but like I said, everybody with the Winter bridge seems to have to make some type of "correction" to make it sound good

With respect, I have a Winter, and I haven't done anything special to make it sound good. But I also have and really dig the Nazgul, so I get where you're coming from. I would tend to agree with Mincer, in that if your thing is what the Nazgul does, it will do it REALLY well, but the Winter wins on versatility.

Re: Black Winter or Nazgal in a RR1?

I get along with the Black Winter just fine. I don't have to do anything out of the ordinary to make it sound good. I set them at the very close to the same height as all of my other pickups, I keep the EQ the same as most of my other pickups, and it's great. Out of all of my guitars, I think the one with the Black Winters sound best.

Re: Black Winter or Nazgal in a RR1?

Not gonna fight the crowd - go Invader.

But....if that does not work out, seriously think about a Blackout. Active has came a long way since the EMG 85 of the 80's

Ok, I didn't hate my EMG's, kinda miss the compression I got from them but... I prefer the more "organic" sound of the passive bobbins, the typical humbucker. But, I won't rule out the Blackouts, you got me curious about new active pickups.

Re: Black Winter or Nazgal in a RR1?

I am still curious about a nazgul myself but I have bought two sets of black winters instead because of the first one. They really sound fantastic to me and I don't do anything different on the eq aside from maybe turn the gain down from where I had it set for less hot pickups.

I'm thinking ahead, after the Invader install maybe trying the Nazgul first, then the BW after that. I won't know what I think until I try them myself with my rig... I'll be doing the Invader install in my V this next week.

Re: Black Winter or Nazgal in a RR1?

Well you can add another vote for an Invader!!! LOL!!!

As some will know: I put one in one of my Jacksons the other day (Poplar body though). It’s changed my life let alone this guitar. It’s awesome. It replaced a DM SD which I bought to test for this guitar and which sounded cr*p compared to the Invader. And I can tell you that the Invader’s Tone Profile is exactly as presented on SD’s website i.e. full mids. with “balls”, lovely CONTROLLABLE bottom, and dialed back tops (shrillness a thing of the past for me). It’s got “growl”!!! And it is (surprisingly????) articulate and crisp (given its output).

Excellent! What's your amp pairing?

Re: Black Winter or Nazgal in a RR1?

Ah, good question. No, no maple body or Jackson. The Nazgul is in a Schecter Omen Extreme S-II (mahogany body, maple neck, bolt-on), and the Winter is in a Epiphone Les Paul Standard PlusTop Pro (mahogany body and neck, set neck).

Are you playing a high gain amp?

Are you playing a high gain amp?

It's a Marshall, with the gain coming from a pedal. I'm not a high-gain metal guy, though. I like to set the gain just high enough to create the aggression I need, but not so saturated that I risk losing note definition. Having said that, both the Nazgul and the Winter are built to handle high-gain situations, and in the rare cases when I turn up the distortion, I'm never displeased with the result on either guitar.

Close enough! ;)
