Blackout Modulas Preamp Question.

Hi guys!

It's my first post here and I have a big question. First of all, I'm planning to revive an old '04 Ibanez DT200 I got from a pawn shop, it came with EMG's and modded with a battery pocket, originally I wanted to keep the pickups and sell the guitar but with the release of the Black Winter pickups I changed my mind, so my question is: If I put a BO Modular preamp to a BW pickups, will it work? I know they list the BW as High output Pu's but I wanna throw a lot of mods on that DT and I don want to solder Push/Pull pots again. I hope you guys could help me.

Have a nice day :)

Re: Blackout Modulas Preamp Question.

Yes it will work. The bigger question is, will it sound good? That I'm not so sure about. I wouldnt bet on it. You want to do alot of mods but you dont want to solder again? But you will have to do some if you get the BMP1 so I'm not sure what your trying to save yourself from. Whats wrong with using the black winters as is?

Re: Blackout Modulas Preamp Question.

Originally I was going to save myself from solder another set of push/pull pots, my sight is weak and it was a nightmare. Then after I wrote this, noticed that It was going to sound aweful with the BMP1, but still I want to do some non-splitting mods on that guitar. Maybe I'll give up and use the Black Winter as it is on bridge and a medium output SD on neck.

Re: Blackout Modulas Preamp Question.

Yes, I believe it's not generally recommended to use the BO modular preamp with higher output pick ups. You can of course. But I recall reading that it works better with low to medium output pickups.

What sort of mods are you thinking of? Like series and parallel? You could go with a milder set of pickups if you want to use the BMP.

Re: Blackout Modulas Preamp Question.

I was thinking on some coil splitting, but I'll get a mini on/off switch for that, the BW are gonna be in my country in about 3 weeks, so I'll have some time to gather the pieces, any advice on the neck pickiup, I'm a mostly rhythm guitar player, so most of the time I'll be using the BW, any recommendations to get a balanced set?

Re: Blackout Modulas Preamp Question.

By balanced do you mean the same tone or the same output? You could always just get the black winter set. If your looking for the same output you could go with a SH6N. Tonally depends on what your after.

Re: Blackout Modulas Preamp Question.

I was going to, but the BW's set is kinda expensive in my country, and I also have to pay shipping, and that's a 25dlls difference. So I'll get the BW on bridge and maybe the SH6N on neck. Thank you Edgecrusher for being so helpful :)

What country are you in? The production version just came out and is just arriving around Europe.

It's a pretty aggressive/high-output pickup as it is, the BMP may be too much for it.

Yeah I think he changed his mind on the preamp at least thats what I understood from earlier in the thread. Adding the BO Preamp to Blackwinters might be like putting a flame thrower on your chain saw.... Just a bit too much for anything.

2nd thought maybe a flamethrower on a chainsaw could be quite a bit of fun

Re: Blackout Modulas Preamp Question.

I'm from Mexico, so the dealer here have the BW's (with shipping) in 240 dlls, the SH6 and the BW for bridge it's about 218 dlls (with shipping) so it's quite a difference, and I'll need new pots and switches too.

The flamethrower chainsaw sound like fun, but on our last rehearsal, our drummer had to throw me a drumstick 'cause I was doing a cool bunch of noise with my pedals, so for the sake of everyone, including my head, the BO Preamp it's off the list.
