so ya i havent tried blackouts, but i hear they are the seymournized versions of emg and i read the description and heard all the hype. basically a zakk wylde set that has a 10 % urgrade in dynamics warmth and silence. okay whatever, it seems to me that probably one of the reasons all the former not really famous emg users are switching over is because they want to be known for using blackouts first like zakk wylde, metalica and slayer got their names further recognized for being one of the first of many famous people to use and endorse emg's. ive played tyhe 81 and th 85 and they do exactly what they are described to do on their website hehe.
sure th 81 isnt a clean beast but with gain its perfect and is always clear no matter how much gain you give it which isnt true about a lot of pickups. the 85 sounds great clean and dirty in the neck. i never really use any bridge pickup for clean anyways its too trebley. Also yes the guitar that they go in matter and they do take on the sound of a guitar. Ive found thicker mahogany guitars like a les paul sound great with them. or somthing with a warm resonating body and a warm fretboard. they sound beefy that way. they sound pretty good in solosist rg type guitars too, they sound fine in cheap guitars but better in quality ones.
Anyways i think they are great, but i just dont like it when other companies copy or copy and improve slightly on another companies idea, dimarzio did the same thing and bare knuckle did too. ive found this is true with everything even vitamin water i just thought blackouts should have been a tad more different at least different looking like shiny black metal covers, you know not entirely copying the emg look, that way it would be more of a reason to get them because it would somthing emg didnt offer. I dont think the 81 sounds sterile because i know what it's for .....high gain soloing!! even with just regular crunch i thought they were great. they are not gunna give a normal paf gibson sound, hehe a lot of dumb people expect that and say its crap because they are dumb. but whatever i played emg single coils too and they were good also. Anyways this is the only seymour duncan i have a problem with because its like a 90% copy of somthing that already exists in anothr company. I lve duncans though every one ive tried i loved.
