As I posted earlier, my buddy bought me an import Dean Razorback in flat black with a kill switch.
Not a guitar I would have ever ever bought, but my buddy saw me with my battered Gibson Gothic Explorer, and picked me one that resembled it... I at first was like 'blah', but then I picked it up and low and behold it plays nice and is actually kinda resonant... not the best, but certainly much better than I expected!
Now, the stock pickups were not too shaby... a little flat, and DID NOT clean up with the volume rolling back, which is VITAL too my playing style.
I decided on Duncan blackouts. 1.) They looked like the covered stock pickups, so they wouldn't change the stealth look of the guitar. 2.) They were instock local, no shipping and waiting (I hate that.). 3.) They were 20 bucks cheaper than EMGs.
Well guys, these things are staying and MAY actually duplicate themselves and wind up replacing my long loved WCR Ironman set. They absolutly slay at the brutalz, and do it with remainin VERY clear. They really do feel like passives... no they don't completely sound like them, but they have that nice elastic bounce and are quite touch sensitive.
The neck is a TAD bloated for my liking, but is very usefull for singing solos. My WCR Darkburst is a bit brighter and dare I say stratier, but this is very good non the less... and clean sounds are warmer and still clear. The Darkburst is almost more sterile... go figure. Not in a bad way though.
I am a metal head at heart, but I play a lot of funk and a lot of bluesy stonerish stuff. These can do that for me. I have been chasing my tail with passives and uber expensive boutique stuff, and these things hang with the crazy expensive stuff or down right beat it... I have too spend time with both guitars too really feel and hear the difference.
Bottom line... these blackouts are seriously making a cheap MIC Dean compete with an expensive MIA Gibson with expensive MIA boutique winds.
