Blackouts question....

Hey guys...

I've been gassing HARD for some actives for my latest axe.. I've been thinking EMG's but maybe Blackouts might be a better option... However!!!

* I dislike soldering.. LOL!!!

I wonder if I had the guitar already setup with an EMG 3 way switch (with the EMG pickup buss included, quick connect cables, etc)... Once I mount the Blackouts, would they be able to plug into the quick connects and work straight away? I've read in places some wires need to be swapped.. I've read in others that nothing else is needed... etc. If that's the case.. then basically replace the switch and pots with the EMG setup (no soldering ;-) and then plug in the blackouts to the 3 way switch buss.. and Rock out...

But I"m confused... Will it work.. will I have to modify the wiring? Will it cause the Apocalypse? The BMP is out for me.. because I plan to get a "Gold covered" pickup.. whether it's EMG or Blackouts.

For Blackouts I'm thinking AHB-1.. and for the EMG's I'm thinking 81-60 or maybe the 57-66.

Thanks/ Rock on!!
Peter

Re: Blackouts question....

I'll say this. I have never been a fan of actives. Was in a band with a guy who had EMG's, so I played and heard them a lot. I see why people like them - but not me.

That said, I got a Blackout on a lark. I freaking love it. I would play almost any style of music with it. Love how the volume control works to go from mild to wild. Really great TONE.

And I'm a hater....

No question about Duncan vs EMG. That's not fan boy speaking. I just think Duncan really took active up a notch. Or three.

Re: Blackouts question....

Hi Peter.

The only thing you will need to do is solder a .47uf cap on the emg solderless (passive) tone pot. Without it, the tone knob rotation is barely audible. I've done this on 4 of my guitars as I absolutely love Blackouts (and the solderless kits) and want a fully functional tone knob 😊

Actually... today I was trying to research if the active tone pot that is meant for the emg x series (emg vlpf) is a direct solderless swap that will work with the Blackouts without the need to solder the .47uf cap. Does anyone know if this is the case?

Peter all other emg accessories work with Blackouts. No mods required. For example..... pi2, pa2, rpc, spc etc...

Re: Blackouts question....

+1

The standard issue green capacitor on passive EMG tone controls achieves very little. Replace this with the red cap supplied with a Seymour Duncan active pickup and the tone control will begin to behave like a tone control should.

The EMG VLPF active tone control is a different kettle of fish.

If you are going to buy EMG pickups, please make it the -X versions.

Re: Blackouts question....

Thanks Funkfingers. You have just saved me $40. I was so so close to buying the VLPF to test if it will work with the Blackouts. That is a shame it doesn't though :-( I was really interested to hear how it sounded.
