Blast from my past -- proto-metal/prog song from 2009

TwilightOdyssey

Darkness on the edge of Tone
Came upon this older song of mine from my old band, Phantom Isle. Holds up pretty well -- basic tracks were recorded live in our rehearsal room and then a few overdubs were added. Unfortunately, this was never developed into a finished product...

Super Jethro Tull-y to me, and that's a very good thing.

I hear Iron Maiden & Rush. Is that the Twilight Odyssey singer? Wow this is a real gem...fantastic arrangments/riffs & progression..guitars/bass sound killer & the vocals RULE! It's a hell of a mix too. Damn If you have an album's worth of this stuff...you need to put it out there man..it's awesome :bigthumb:

Re: Blast from my past -- proto-metal/prog song from 2009

Thanks!

Yep, that is PJ on vocals. There is a Phantom Isle album that has been stuck in the aether for years, one of the primary reasons behind going solo with As Follows was my frustration with PI's lack of progress.

Releasing PI would be ... complicated due to publishing rights, even though I wrote, arranged, recorded, produced, and mixed all of the songs. A four year lesson in frustration lol.

Anyway -- I have about 15 demos at the same level of quality as Mythloria, as well as the first (and final) album.

I will leak them here from time to time, perhaps. Who knows?! Was in a nostalgic mood last night ...

No joke, you're one of the most talented songwriters I've heard. And I gotta give you huge props for probably being the most active member on this section of the forum.

Thanks, man. The drummer in my melodic rock project, NAUTILUS (stuff will be forthcoming soon) says I'm sickeningly prolific lol.
There is no 'secret' -- just listen to as much music as you can, listen to your influences' influences, and THEIR influences, until you can start to see the 'genetic code', and then try to write something every day.

Re: Blast from my past -- proto-metal/prog song from 2009

I definitely write everyday. I have around 250 ideas right now on my iPod. I really want to get together with my drummer soon and get some quality recordings to throw up here.

Re: Blast from my past -- proto-metal/prog song from 2009

That's awesome! Two sayings spring to my mind when it comes to recording and whether it sounds good enough for putting out into the public arena. The first one is, "It will be better than good; it will be done" -- too many times people will spend months/years tinkering with ideas or mixes; there really is no need. Just jam, record, and move on. It will sort itself out over time. The other one is, "Sometimes good enough is good enough". Pretty self explanatory. :)

Re: Blast from my past -- proto-metal/prog song from 2009

I totally agree. When we jam together, I just set a Zoom thingy down and hit record. A quality recording to me is one that has quality material on it.
