Blink-182 Question.

Did Tom Delonge ever use the SH-8 Invader pickup for any recordings? I've heard mixed stories sooooo I thought I would come to all of you guys for your words. I'm looking to emulate the Blink tone in one of my guitars and I wanted to find out what he used. Any custom shop winds for him or anything?

Re: Blink-182 Question.

I've heard everything from EMGs studio-wise to Invader live
and more recently, the Dirty Fingers.

There's also a rumour of blending a Mesa and a Marshall...

Re: Blink-182 Question.

There used to be a couple sites dedicated to just his guitars! Most are probably gone by now, but you might try an internet search.

To clarify, YES, Invaders were used in both recording and live. A couple oddball guitars (Les Pauls and semi-hollows) have made appearances, but, if you really want "his" pickup from a Blink 182 standpoint, stick with the Invader. 90% or more of his personal guitars were fitted with those...

Re: Blink-182 Question.

Something to look into,
I beleive it was an invader neck, put in bridge position.

:scratchch never thought of that, but it definitely makes sense. a lot of ppl talking about his sound often say it's not the usual 'invader' tone(saying it's too bright), but he clearly has an invader in there. i think a lot of his tone has to do with the amp(s) too though. you can run invaders in your guitars all day, but if you're running it through a little fender mustang or a vox ac or anything that's not similar to that mesa/marshall setup, it still won't sound right.

Everywhere I've read says enema of the state was recorded with les pauls almost exclusively. He uses a variety of guitars lately but for his live sound it's all Dirty Fingers. If you want Mark, Tom, and Travis Show tones you need an invader.

Re: Blink-182 Question.

At 1 time he was using a MESA Dual Rec for his OD tones and a Marshall JCM900 on the OD channel with the gain set low for his clean tone.

Guitars in the earlier days tended to be Les Pauls (not sure on pickups) and then he went to the single Hum strats with the Invader.

His later stuff was that 335 style (not sure how hollow etc his is) with the racing stripe and a single Dirty Fingers pickup.

Re: Blink-182 Question.

I heard he used resistors and stuff in the circuit of his invader equipped strat. not sure why or what they did but I'm sure I've seen it somewhere.

you know, I've seen and heard an awful lot of Blink 182,
but none of those clips has had a LP in them...

Re: Blink-182 Question.

He most certainly did record with Les Pauls! Moreso early on, but that just goes to show that you can't always judge a tone by its cover!

He has used a few different Gibsons over the years. Also, while all of his Strats had humbuckers at the bridge, not all of them were Invaders! The effects, amps and recording conditions also changed a lot between albums, so there is much more to getting his sound than just the guitar/pickup combo alone!

The majority of the guitars he has owned have been Invader-equipped Strats. If you are aiming to get in the range of his sound and are buying Seymour Duncan brand pickups for your guitar, then the Invader is certainly a step in the right direction.

HOWEVER...I can not tell you if he used a Bridge or Neck model of the Invader with 100% certainty! The info out there is highly conflicting!

I personally had a very early production Tom Delonge signature Strat and the Invader was simply marked "B", so I just assumed it was the Bridge model. However, the official Fender parts list for his signature Strat says "Pickup, Neck, Duncan Invader". Figure that one out!

UPDATE:

This is what I'm talking about. Here are two different samples of the "B" marked pickups found in his Fender production signature Strat...

Re: Blink-182 Question.

Do you think I could get one custom ordered from MJ? Like based on ones to his specs?

Why would you pay a custom shop price for a production pickup? MJ can work a lot of magic but do you really think shes got the inside scoop to what he "really" used? At best they can say we sold/made him this or that but there is no guarantee that thats what he used.

In the end your just urinating upwind unless your going to get a whole rig like his just using his pickup isnt going to cut it.

I'm mystified why anyone would want to try and cop his tone anyways it wasnt that great.
