Blog: A Brief History of '80s Shred Guitars

Re: Blog: A Brief History of '80s Shred Guitars

I will always be a fan of the Super Strat.
A neck thru, easy access 24 fret, OFR, Strat style double cutaway will always be my go to guitar.

My ugly mug.

Yep, I love mine. Wonder if the slanty pups in JEL's Charvel were the inspiration.

Since I'm a bit younger than most of the famous "hair metal" bands, I was always opening for them in Hollywood in the late 80's/early 90's.

Here's the gear I had at that time.

My San Dimas Charvel looked like this newer one. I added a Hot Rails neck to the zebra JB.

White Kramer Nightswan (bought it when it first came out at GC Lawndale, where I worked.

I have three G&L super-strat guitars.

Mid 80's Rampage and Invader

1988 Interceptor

The honeyburst guitar is a '97 G&L, Invader. I no longer own it.

Re: Blog: A Brief History of '80s Shred Guitars

I don't belie-eeeeve in love! :14:

Cheers, Chaoz. I'm all about trying different flavors of the same thing. One day I'll find the formula.

Re: Blog: A Brief History of '80s Shred Guitars

I love these types of guitars as much as I love the traditional classics!

Re: Blog: A Brief History of '80s Shred Guitars

In the late 80's on through the mid 90's heydays of hair metal the 2 companies who virtually ruled the Shread guitar market were Jackson and Carvin and you omitted both!!
My former Carvin collection from that era.

Re: Blog: A Brief History of '80s Shred Guitars

Cool link, but it left me wanting more.

I started playing in '89, and I was heavily influenced by the proficient metal guitar playing of the time and the gear used to make it happen. I was never into the cross-dressing rodeo clown look, however........ :laugh2:

My influences have expanded greatly since then, but my core gear is still from that era or in the spirit of that era, namely Mesa Boogie Mark and Marshall amps, and Jackson/Charvel super strats, etc. Super Strats of course become EXTREMELY unfashionable only a few years after I started playing, but I never found the need to join the Grunge anti-metal movement, even for one second.:barf: I remember old geezers and young turncoats/anti-metal types always told me (especially after '92), "what you need is a good Strat or LP, get rid of those super strats". But I've never been one to follow trends, so meh.

My first Holy Grail was a black Jackson Soloist USA, which I suppose I still need to pickup one day (!), although I've gotten almost all of my other grails covered, especially on the Charvel side, with their own version of the Soloist (650 Custom), and their best bolt-ons (San Dimas USA and MIJ and 475s) and two great Carvins. Still need to pickup an original Ibanez RG770 and either the Jackson or Charvel version of the Archtop Soloist/750XL. :smokin:

I guess since we are sharing, Ill play too. Back in the actual day, all I had was a lame Kramer Striker 300 and only knew 3 chords. I was more focused on singing. Im making up for it as a mid life crisis...
