Blog: Does Size Matter?

Re: Blog: Does Size Matter?

Of course. But I think the real question is this: who does size matter more to, men or women? I mean, why would female guitarists need huge stacks? '

Re: Blog: Does Size Matter?

Unpractical is very strange to see. I have never heard it used before, always impractical.

Re: Blog: Does Size Matter?

"Only 10 dB"? 10 dB is a HUGE difference when we're talking about 100 dB vs 110 dB. Decibels are logarithmic, and it is just pure misinformation to imply 10 dB is always a small difference.

Re: Blog: Does Size Matter?

Size matters, but not as much for tone, if that was implied. It matters most for moving air - for distance projection without loss of frequencies.

When the rationale for a large amp is related to tone, it's because certain equipment does have a certain sound. Speakers are designed to be installed in a particular size cabinet with a certain amount of air behind them, which affects their frequency response. The construction of the cabinet affects tone and transient detail also. If you are going to stick a mic a foot away from that, it does expose subtleties in the tone. But it's also possible to find smaller equipment is capable of producing near-equivalent tone. Depends on how demanding and detail-oriented the need is (e.g. studio recording vs. live in a less-than-desirable sounding room.)

Exactly. +10db means 10x louder.

Generally people suck balls at understanding logarithmic progressions.

Take this scenario:
You have a pond with one lilly pad in it. Each day each lilly pad will create a new lilly pad. In 30 days the lilly pads will completely cover the surface of the pond. On which day will the lilly pads cover 50% of the pond?

Surprisingly few people will answer correctly that it's on day 29.

Re: Blog: Does Size Matter?

Good article..

For me size does not matter as long is it sounds big... I run a Traynor v30 vertical slant 2x12 with my amp heads and it sounds a lot bigger than its size and I also favor a Peavey PA ported cab with 15" speaker... Not too big physically but has low end and deep tone for days.

Size only really matters if you are playing a huge stage and are using a blues jr... then it just looks dorky :nono:

Re: Blog: Does Size Matter?

There's more to the size and tone issue, than just numbers: watts, decibels, kilograms, thousands of dollars, vintage etc...

There is context. A fifty watt halfstack is overkill for condo noodling. But on an outdoor stage with the loudest band in the hood it's no longer quite the monster. Small amps and big amps are different tools for different purposes.

This was a Cartalk Puzzler a couple weeks ago.
