this is why you shouldn't buy cheap guitars with cheap FRs

Re: Blog: Floyd Troubles? Put Your Strat Under the Knife!

Those Floyded mexi strats have micro tilt neck adjustments. All that needed to be done was to slightly increase the neck angle using the micro tilt to get the trem to sit level and it would have worked perfect. Routing the body to fix that problem was like fixing a flat tire by buying a whole new car, a bit extreme. Even if it didn't have a micro tilt the other less invasive fix would have been a thin shim in the pocket to increase the angle. You'd be surprised at how big a change a shim as thin as a piece of sandpaper cut to the shape of the back edge of the neck pocket makes. As a bonus the sticky back sandpaper works quite well so it never falls out if the neck needs to come off. It's when you get to big shims (pick thickness) that they can cause problems and need to be made properly angled to support the whole neck.

That's the point at the end of the article. It could be done in a much less invasive way. but the owner wanted it like this, and he wanted full floating capabilities. So, why not?

Re: Blog: Floyd Troubles? Put Your Strat Under the Knife!

This reminds me of a thread on the MusicMan forum. A guy wanted his Axis backrouted; I suggest he try shimming the neck first, since it'd surgery-free and quicker, and it'd allow him to test it out without committing to removing wood. My comment got teased saying you had to go all the way or not do it at all. Then the guitar came back with a much bigger route than needed for the Floyd and A LOT of visible routed wood on top of that beautiful top! Heartbreaking stuff... A shim may seem less efficient (breaks neck-pocket contact) but it IS the way to go, at the very least to test and be sure of what you want.
