Blog: Floyd Upgrades

Re: Blog: Floyd Upgrades

Nice blog. May look into some of these upgrades that I haven't thought about before such as brass spring claw.

Re: Blog: Floyd Upgrades

When I first saw the brass blocks and all, my first thought was snake oil!! But after Ive seen the diff first hand, I add them on all my better floyd equipped guitars. The diff is definately noticable. I have also used the milled brass claw and like the feel of the raw vintage springs. Ive not yet seen where to get the coated springs. Something else Ive done on my top 3 guitars is the Ti insert blocks that hold the strings. I cant really tell a tonal benefit, but they dont break like the stockers do. I do have one question though. I know the diff in the big blocks is because of the mass and weight. Since Titanium is lighter, do Ti blocks make as much difference? I wouldnt think so, because of the weight. Im guessing they work simply due to the mass?

From what I've read, if you have a Licensed Floyd like a Schaller Floyd or Ibanez Edge that has a cast base plate with the hardened steel saddles, the titanium brightens up the darker tone of the case base, but can be overkill on the hardened steel base of an Original Floyd Rose. Similarly, Titanium may help in a Mahogany bodied guitar

That's right. I've yet to try the titanium block in bridge with hardened steel construction. I might do a swap around soon though to see what it is like. I do have a feeling though that it may make the tone too bright.

Re: Blog: Floyd Upgrades

Nice timing for me. I just acquired an 1987 Charvel Model 3 in "project" condition. The good news is that somebody upgraded the humbucker to a JBJ. The bad news is that the JT-6 vibrato bridge had disintegrated.

Re: Blog: Floyd Upgrades

I think an OFR will go right in there Funk.

Just for whomever wrote that, OFR's are not made from stainless, but rather hardened steel.

Re: Blog: Floyd Upgrades

Does anyone know off the top of their head where to start looking for a titanium sustain block for an Ibanez edge III bridge? I can start searching around Google when I get home from work... But until then if anyone has an idea where to start looking, that would be awesome.

Re: Blog: Floyd Upgrades

Floydupgrades is where I know carries Ti blocks. I usually get my blocks from KGC tho, but I dont recall seeing Ti in thier offerings. BUT dont hold me to that as I normally dont shop for Ti. I do get Ti inserts from them.

JMH151, Good point, didnt think of that.

I have all my main floyd equipped guitars upgraded except one now. (dont have funds to do the bc rich yet) My top 2 charvels have blocks, claws, springs and Ti inserts. I debated on whether or not to put a block on my 80s kramer cuz it had a factory trem stop in it and it was so good I didnt want to mess it up, but with the big block it sustains just as well and I have full range now. My one Charvel, I even put the brass fine adjust knobs on. I wish they came in black as I dont care for it visually, but its trick to the gills and plays like a dream.. sooooo

I forgot to mention that I also have the stainless locking screws to lock the saddles. The guitar sustains like a fixed bridge axe.

The Ti block would be worth more than the Edge III. In all honesty I'd upgrade the bridge first if you love the guitar otherwise. The Edge III was not built to last, and I'd hate to sink some decent coin on a block to only have the knife edges or saddles, etc fail a while later. The Edge III blocks are not transferable to another bridge.

Re: Blog: Floyd Upgrades

If anyone is interested in Titanium blocks for their OFR, Schaller or Floyd Rose Pro, Floyd Rose themselves have the option. I can supply any part for an OFR in Titanium, or even the ENTIRE bridge. PM me if interested.
