Blog: Having it All. The Fat Strat.

Re: Blog: Having it All. The Fat Strat.

Well done. Not that he was the first to do this, but a certain hungover teenager/South Cal guitar virtuoso knew what he was doing when he slapped a PAF humbucker into the bridge slot of his on-the-cheap Strat copy.

Great article from Matt as usual.

I'm definitely a split-position fan, and have my fat strat set up the same as his. In a mirror.

I have a Tele with two Pearly Gates. Nice guitar, I never cared for buckers in a Strat. I guess I am more traditional.

Re: Blog: Having it All. The Fat Strat.

I've been rocking SSL2-SSL2-59/C for a while and it's sweet - there's no drastic output difference between the singles and the bucker; and tonally, the 59/C has that crisp top end that matches the SSLs nicely. I'm surprised it's not recommended in the article as a complement to vintage singles, actually.

Admittedly, the middle+bridge isn't that quacky but I use neck+middle for that when I want it.

Actually, that's a good point. The 59/Custom isn't too overpowering in series, and if you split to the Custom coil the output will match very well with the vintage singles.

Which coil do you use when splitting?

Hm, wonder why the Screamin' Demon isn't on the list as a good match for vintage output singles. Evan posted this a while back in the pup room, sounds pretty damn good to me.

As for the 59/C, I half contemplated turning the pu upside down - so the slug coil faces the bridge - to get even more contrast with the other pups when split and perhaps a better notch tone but whatever, more play, less tweak!
