Blog: The Cheapest (And Tastiest) Strap Locks

Re: Blog: The Cheapest (And Tastiest) Strap Locks

I use that trick on my Les Paul traditional, ever since I installed a bigsby on it, and the schaller's won't fit. Can't say it's not a great idea, as it really does work.

Re: Blog: The Cheapest (And Tastiest) Strap Locks

I use bottle seals on a couple guitars......one's with the strap button at the heel, since I don't want the strap buttons protruding too far out. SG and ES-335.

Actually on those guitars, I'll use a metal washer at the neck heel with the strap permanently affixed there, then use the rubber bottle seal on the butt end of the guitar so I can remove it and roll the strap up.

I just wish I could find these in black instead of orange.

Or, olive oil. Every time I look for the old style Grolsch bottles, I end up finding the kind with caps.
I have better luck finding them on olive oil bottles.

A better, easier, and more secure way of doing that is to follow these steps:

1) Drink your beverage of choice. I like to "use" whatever cap would work with the guitar, like a Guinness for black guitars etc.

2) Take cap, unscrew entire button assembly.

3) Take screw, and some type of blunt object life your buddy's head, and tap the screw slightly through the center of the cap. Should leave a hole that fits tightly around screw.

4) Put strap on button as usual, but before you screw it in, place the cap on top of the button, and screw it in. You know you followed the directions right if when done, all you see is the screw head and the bottle cap.

5) Your guitar will never fall off again.

The Schaller strap locks fit fine on my Bigsby-equipped Duo Jet. What was the problem with your LP?

Re: Blog: The Cheapest (And Tastiest) Strap Locks

I never DID understand strap locks, wouldn't a simple system of nuts and washers bolting down the strap do just as well?? What was the point, a pretty product for a store to offer professional installation (what a joke) on, or what?????

Yep. I ordered a pair of straplocks to see if they were any better. They were worse. Way worse than what I was already doing.

It has a vibramate, making the hole where the bridge pin would fit too deep to put the straplocks in.

You can easily fix that by using a longer screw. I'm pretty sure that's what I did (it's been a couple years).

I guess if you never take a strap off or put a guitar in its case you could maybe get away with bolting a strap to a guitar.

Being that I'm a guy who does both those things quite frequently, I opted for the "pretty products".

Ever seen those straps with the snap-on/snap-off things like you find on a fanny pack or some backpacks? I think it was from DiMarzio and specifically built for bolted-down use.

Oh I see ... so those things are acceptable, but something that accomplishes exactly the same task, yet is purpose built for guitar straps, is not?
