I always dig your stuff! I like the guitars alot. lots of U2 feel on this one. I like the positive vibe, it suits your stuff well. drums are pretty repetitive snare and bassdrum - you have them eqed right; I like the little fills. I hear some cymbols but they arent really present in the mix. tamberine is a nice effect. I like the guitar solo type stuff - I like solos that are short and obscure. Your hitting some nice high notes! some notes you are singing fit well, others are a little bit in a different key. The 4 pulses that you hear at the beginning are not in the same key?
Thanks bro. Now you got me worried because I don't hear anything that doesn't fit? The intro in the bass is Ab Eb Bb Bb and the little pulses are just Eb notes over the top. The song starts in Eb min with the displaced sequence being Ab Eb Bb Bb. I do change the vocal melody out of Eb min later on but to my ears it all works? Does something sound bad to you?
I'm totally confused!!! LOL As long as it's one of my better ones I should shut the f up.
What I was doing when I wrote the bass line was "displacing" the chords in the key of Eb min. So, the song goes Ab Eb Bb Bb for the intro and verse then Db Db Ab Ab for the pre chorus then resolves to the tonic for Eb Bb F F in the chorus. But the vocal melody changes out of Eb min so that may be the twist? I think that makes it sound like the song changes keys...or I lost my mind.
voice your opinion You definitely mix it up on teh forumz
ya, rock/pop is mainly about octaves and 5ths, sometimes 3rds; in other words mainly pentatonic. when its not a chord, I think octaves sound better; thats why I think the 4 pulses should mirror the same notes of the bassline. If the song is really sparse of notes (like 3 notes) then I think its good to stick with this punk rock sort of pentatonic structure.
Your singing note choices are fine, I just thought in the parts I identified they could be better. I shouldnt have said "not in the same key" I should have said I would choose another note in the scale. I was thinking major/minor and other keys that the note would have fit better in and its a bit ambiguous the way I wrote it. In the end Im just some dude with an opinion, heh I make a little money gigging but Im not a producer or Berkeley grad lol...

That can get boring too. I always try and defer to what feels good and right and not get too analytical about it. As far as mixing it up nobody benefits from anything other than honesty.
