Blueridge Acoustics for Blues

Ok, some of you already know whats sort of going on with my acoustic shopping. For those of you who don't, I'm looking for a simple, BASIC, solid top guitar just to mess around on. This'll just be for laying in the bed at night, sittin outside on the porch, etc. Oh, and my budget it around $300

Today, I went to a local shop and found these "Blueridge" guitars. They are decently low budget ($400 to $1200) and the looks and craftsmanship easily rival the lower end Martins and Taylors. I played a BR43 ($371, so I'm kinda stretchin it there) and I must say it was very nice. The body isn't quite the shape I was looking for (000 style). But the fret job was good, comes with bone nuts and saddles, solid sitka spruce top, mahogany sides, nice inlay, binding everywhere, fancy looking headstock, and vintage style tuners. For a pic:

But prior to playing it, I've never even heard of this brand. The guy there (it's a very reputable store in my area) said that they're hand-made in China (China part is bad, but he says they weed out all the bad ones and send 'em back), good quality, hold-up great, and compared to everything else in it's price range, it blows them all out of the water. Even the straightup wood quality was obviously MUCH better than anything I've run across at it's price range too. So my question here is: Does anyone here have any experience with this brand? And even though they're kind of aimed at more of a bluegrass/folk crowd, would this body style and such still work for plain strumming and slow blues alright?

One of the two local music stores (one rock and roll and one bluegrass) carries the Blueridge brand. He sold Martins up until 2 years ago. He loves them. I have played them in the store a lot and they are really quite good. They're not Martin D-28 quality, but well worth the money.

Re: Blueridge Acoustics for Blues

i have one of the high end blueridge guitars. BR-183, its basically a clone of the clapton model martin. Its a fantastic guitar and stands up to anything ive ABd it with. I havent had one problem with it, it already had a bone nut and ebony bridge so i havent had to upgrade anything on it.

I cant speak for any of the lower budget ones, but mine it certainly a fantastically well made guitar

Re: Blueridge Acoustics for Blues

so I'm assuming that they still aren't that widely known as a brand yet? not many people here seem to have any experience with them

Re: Blueridge Acoustics for Blues

i guess they arent a very well known brand although i have seen quite a few bluegrass players using them. ive never seen one in any of the big name stores so that could contribute to them flying under the radar.

Re: Blueridge Acoustics for Blues

yeah thats what I figured. The first time I'd ever heard of them was this past Friday in a local store. It's a big store, but it's not a big name chain or anything. I'm not really that suprised that they aren't theat well known; I just thought there'd eb a few more people around these forums that'd know about em. These days if the brand isn't carried at **** GC, it doesn't even exist to most people.

Re: Blueridge Acoustics for Blues

I've played a few Blueridge guitars, a local pawn/music shop carries them. One of my dad's friends has this one with a black pickguard, http://www.elderly.com/new_instruments/names/blueridge-br-180-dreadnought--BR180.htm
I thought they were excellent guitars, I'm not sure on the pricing but I was really surprised with them, especially never having heard of them before. Musicians Fiend has started carrying them I believe. I really dig the Breedlove acoustics but those are kind of pricey, speaking of Breedloves has anyone gotten a chance to sit down with one of the Revival models? I made the mistake of picking one up at GC and I have never heard/played an acoustic like that.

Re: Blueridge Acoustics for Blues

Yeah one thing I noticed on all of their guitars (and I read as a common complaint): their headstocks are so narrow, that the strings commonly sit up against the tuner posts (slightly). And if you find one that isn't like that, it's **** close to it. What kind of problems does this pose in terms of tunings stability and playability other than just plain annoyance. I would that that other than bending alot on the 1-3rd frets that it'd be a problem, and should effect the notes since it's behind the nut. And if it's up against the slick part of the post, I wouldnt think it'd be much of a tuning problem either. Any opinions?
